Kelly Explains Why Trump May Choose This Running Mate Despite Objections From His Base (I hope she's wrong)

There are many names being floated as former President Donald Trump’s running mate, including the ever-loyal Rep. Elise Stefanik (R-NY), whom he reportedly believes would be a “killer” pick. But Megyn Kelly named the possibility of another woman that could be chosen—one which would infuriate his base.

“Is it out of the realm of possibility that he chooses [Nikki] Haley? Absolutely not. It’s not. I realize that MAGA doesn’t want it. They’ve convinced themselves that Nikki Haley is against all the things that they stand for,” she told Dave Rubin.

Kelly argued he may have to just deal with the choice if he wants to win.

“He personally really must win if he doesn’t want to go to jail,” Kelly argued, predicting that if he loses he's going to jail for a long time. “If that’s your situation, I think you might be thinking, ‘MAGA is gonna get over Nikki Haley if I tell them to get over Nikki Haley.’ I know for a fact that's how Trump thinks."

What would the advantage be with pulling Haley on board? To Kelly, she would bring the moderates and independents, which Trump needs if he’s going to be victorious come November.

In 2016, Trump needed to convince conservatives he was to be trusted as a Republican president, hence the Mike Pence pick, she said.

"Now he needs something different," Kelly argued. "He needs to convince moderates and Democrats he’s not the devil, he’s not going to do a six week abortion ban, the things that drive Dems to the polls, so it does make some sense."

Rubin agreed with Kelly’s assessment.

“I could not agree more,” Rubin said. “When I see all these people that are suddenly like, 'No, he’ll never do it,’ and/or, ‘I won’t vote for him if he chooses Nikki,’ it’s like, you’ll do what Trump kind of tells you to do, actually.”

No. It won’t be Haley. Trump would be more likely to choose Pence for a replay.

From the article:

“They’ve convinced themselves that Nikki Haley is against all the things that they stand for...”

I didn’t convince myself. Nikki Haley convinced me.

He tried keeping the enemy close last time and it didn’t work.

Nikki Haley would be the ultimate personnel fail, a sign that Trump learned nothing with Pence. She is a globalist and an icky one, best known for wrecking Civil War monuments. She’s as bad as Romney. This would be Trump’s middle finger to his base.

It worked quite well. He knows the enemy
He won’t be needing that any longer.

She’s right about one thing, they’ll get over Haley if he tells them to get over Haley

"He needs to convince moderates and Democrats he’s not the devil"

Having Haley as VP running mate won't change that. But at least Kelly has shown she hasn't really changed since 2016.

Correct. Unlike a number of his appointments in his first administration, Trump needs to pick someone who has their unquestionable loyalty.

She’s just trying to subtly push Ikki Haley

Haley may very well be the worst possible choice for VP candidate in 2024.

The only way she might have been able to salvage any credibility as a VP contender would have been if she never ran for the GOP nomination in the first place.

Former opponents in a primary race rarely ever make for a good pair in the general election.

If you want to see who the top contenders for the VP slot would be, focus on these characteristics:

1. Open support of Trump from the start of this campaign cycle.
2. A "safe" candidate from the standpoint of the GOP leadership (i.e., there will be no political outsider in this role).
3. Appeals to a key demographic group for a GOP candidate.
4. A personality that is very unlike Trump's (need a low-key candidate who will offset his brash, big-mouth New Yorker attitude).

Put these four together, and you see why I have said for three years now that Kristi Noem is the ideal VP candidate in 2024.

By the time Super Tuesday comes around, we should know Trump has selected Elise Stefanik.

I agree. I’ve caught a couple of Trump’s campaign speeches this past week and he seems pretty disdainful of her.

Kristi Noem would be much better IMO. For one thing, she has executive experience as a successful governor.

Trump would loose so much support if he did this. As before I think these stories are BS.

I don’t know who he will pick. It won’t be Haley. She has proven herself to be a Democrat. She would also be too dangerous to the American people if Trump gets removed or killed. She would sign every Democrat legislation that came across her desk.

It could be Ron DeSantis, perhaps.

This time around, he needs to have a solid checklist of 100 questions for anyone he wants in his administration. And the first 99 questions on that checklist need to be: “Will they be loyal to me?”

Nothing else really matters.
Haley is a no-go.
