And the EU is focused on some line from a 50-year-old TV show. I wonder what’s next. Maybe they should issue an arrest warrant for Shatner himself. After all, the guy is, at the least, a gun nut.

I'm not sure if "cognitive dissonance" is the right term here, maybe it's "can't see the forest for the trees"?

I don't know. What I do know is, everybody is freakin' insane these days. Worrying about stupid nothings and ignoring the very dangerous crap that is in front of our eyes.
