If you are lining up against Bill Shatner. You should normally stop and check yourself. He might have tripped up here and there, but he is a very solid even handed guy with a great attitude towards life.

Shortly after Star Trek ended, Shatner might have gone all Tina Louise, lamenting being typecast. He had a REALLY down period reduced to doing Canadian supermarket ads. But the man just kept on plugging, showing up on time, and refusing to go away until things came around to him.

Granted, Captain Kirk and Star Trek is more enduring than Ginger Grant and Gilligan's Island, but young adults today might know him just as much as Denny Crane or the Priceline guy as Captain James Kirk. He NEVER eschewed the movie sequels, never afraid that he couldn't be Captain Kirk and TJ Hooker at the same time. He was willing to do self-parody in Airplane! and various TV ads (Oldsmobile comes to mind). Taking small parts did not make him a small man. Instead it made him larger than life.

Aren't guns great?--Denny Crane

At one point after Star Trek was cancelled, Shatner lived in a camper shell attached to the bed of his Ford pickup.

Here he is having a “discussion” with a sleazeball client.
Classic Denny Crane.

Yeah, I like him too.

One of the few people who could star in three different series and make it work.

The other one that comes to mind is Lee Majors, but I think Shatner has him beat.

“”He was willing to do self-parody in Airplane!””

In a SNL skit, Shatner addressed the Trekkies, and stated in no uncertain terms “Get a life!”

In the last Star Trek movie that was only the original cast, no TNG, I always wondered if Shatner insisted upon the very first words he spoke. As he entered the scene, he stated “what the hell are we doing here?”

One of my favorite original episodes is The Omega Glory. At the end of the episode, another planet had the United States Constitution as their Holy Documents. Captain Kirk read the Preamble to the Constitution with such force.
