Flip Wilson as Geraldine Jones
Groovy History ^ | 1/25/18 | Groovy History

Wilson portrayed many characters on his show and wasn’t afraid to laugh at himself while making his audiences laugh. One of his best-known characters was Geraldine Jones. Geraldine was one of the most recurring characters Wilson portrayed. She was a sassy, outspoken, liberated, black woman. She wore her clothes tight and revealing and flirted with the men but never failed to be anything but faithful to her (never seen) boyfriend, Killer. Geraldine wasn’t the sharpest tool in the shed but that didn’t keep her from being overly confident. She was a “what you see, is what you get” kind of girl.

Man, Flip Wilson, was the biggest thing in the early 70's, and no he was not the original drag queen on TV, Milton Berle, was, things have changed, at least they were not genitally mutilated.

I’m pretty sure most other comics of that time did not have a Drag alter ego, at least, they never performed that way on TV. Red Skelton, Dan Rickles, Professor Irwin Corey are a few of that nature.

Of course some didn’t need to dress up to be “Draggy”
Two of the Hollywood Squares favorite guests;
Paul Lynde, and Charles Nelson Riley come to mind.

Geraldine as a Playboy bunny with Bing Crosby was hysterical.

Would you believe me if I told you that after he left show business, Flip became a commercial helicopter pilot?

Can you imagine climbing in to his ‘copter unawares and then realizing your life rests in the hands of “Geraldine, honey.”

Then after a close call, he turns to you, smiling, "The devil made me do it!"

Flip was not just funny, he also conveyed a sense of being a a fun person with a lot of good in him. Audiences not only liked him, they wanted him to like them.

Flip was a hoot. Along with other black performers of that era, Flip developed much of his material when he was on the “chitlin circuit” of black nightclubs during the waning days of segregation.

I remember one skit where his fellow actor got fresh and pinched Geraldines ass. Geraldine’s responces had me on the floor laughing hard.

He was particularly talented, a genius of timing as well.

Geraldine with Tim Conway and Burt Reynolds!!

Burt Reynolds and Flip Wilson were very good friends.
