Why does the 1970s get painted as such a bad decade?
BBC ^ | 4/16/12 | BBC

Of all post-war decades, the 1970s has undoubtedly had the worst press, but the truth is that most ordinary families in 1970s Britain were better off than ever, writes historian Dominic Sandbrook.

The 1950s are symbolised by the television and the washing machine, which transformed the lives of so many families.

We misremember the 1960s as the decade of the Mini, which was actually invented in 1959, the mini-skirt, which surprisingly few women actually wore, and the Pill, which most women never took. We remember the 1980s as the decade of gigantic hair, shoulder-pads, the Filofax and the home computer.

I was a little kid in that decade. I vaguely remember some cool muscle cars that came out in that decade and there was a lot of good music.

Then again I also remember great big wide collars, shag carpet and disco....which were not the height of good taste.....

Watergate and the Nixon impeachment, end of Vietnam War, the ‘73 Oil Crisis caused by the Yom Kippur War, airliner hijackings, the ‘79 Oil Crisis caused by the Iranian Revolution, the rise of Japan as a peer industrial power, 6.83% mean inflation rate for the decade.

Getting drafted and killed kinda sucked.

Respect to all the Vietnam War veterans, but the war was stupid.

It showed you that the MIC was in charge.

You win the prize

Jimmy Carter the worst president of the second half of the 20th Century. A century of many worst Presidents.

Carter the president that put the peddle to the metal on the decline of the United States.

Carter the president that did everything WRONG.

Carter the president that did nothing to undo any of the wrongs of his predecessors.

I remember the Brady Bunch, Starsky & Hutch, CHIPS, Beretta, Barnaby Jones, 8 is Enough, the Jeffersons, Charlie’s Angels, 3s Company, and Little House on the Prairie and Candid Camera.

I haven’t watched network TV other than live college football since the 20th century. And lest anybody think I’m old I’m Gen X.

The Sitcoms, soap operas, etc etc haven’t changed since I was a kid. All that’s changed is the clothing styles. Its boring.

The Feds told you to set your thermostat to 78/68, and forced you to drive 55 miles per hour, and tried to nudge you into scaling down because we could no longer produce energy domestically ... i.e they lied.

This is SO true. I jumped my dirt bike over everything....and busted my azz too many times to count.

My parents just accepted that that was part of being a boy.

This was me. The movie centered on graduating high school in Austin in 1976.

Change it to San Antonio and you have my experience.

Great movie, that’s how it was living in a small town back in 1976.
