Airline says it will start weighing passengers in addition to baggage to calculate ‘flight balance’

Finland’s flagship airline has announced that it will be weighing passengers as well as their luggage.

Finnair said the move, which will be done on a voluntary basis through May, is designed to improve balance calculations that will enhance flight safety.

“Finnair will collect data by weighing volunteering customers and their carry-on baggage at the departure gate,” according to a statement from the company.

“The weighing is voluntary and anonymous, and the data will only be used to optimize Finnair’s current aircraft balance calculations.”

Finnair said that weighing passengers will help ensure that the airline doesn’t exceed the set maximum weight that a plane can bear before it takes off.

The company has pledged that it will not use customers’ personal data.

“We use the weighing data for the average calculations required for the safe operation of flights, and the collected data is not linked in any way to the customer’s personal data,” Satu Munnukka, head of Finnair’s ground processes, said in a statement.

Munnukka noted that the airline won’t ask for the name or booking number of the passengers that volunteer to be weighed.

Maybe they could charge us by our own weight.

0 - 100 lbs = 50 bucks.
100 - 200 lbs = 150 bucks.
Over 400 (Lizzo-range) you pay 1,000 bucks.

Sounds like Stacy Abrams, Fani Willis, and Big Mike won’t be flying on the SAME Finnair flights anytime soon.

Unless of course it on Wide Body Cargo flights

Heh, airlines had better sit Chris Christie right in the longitudinal center of gravity of the plane or risk total loss of control once the wheels leave the earth. (That is, IF the plan can generate enough lift to let those wheels leave the earth.)

Back in the aughts, I flew on a smaller plane with many empty seats.

The captain had several of us change our seats, spreading us out more evenly to better balance the plane.

Just load the obesemos with the bulk cargo.
The rest of the passengers will go along.

Will not have that line of porkers in wheelchairs clogging up the boarding process either.

Good idea. You don’t want Big Mike, Lizzo, Chris Christie and Fani all sitting in the port window seats at the same time. The pilots won’t be able to trim the aircraft properly and it will just fly in a circle.

I’m at the airport now. Looking around the terminal I’m very worried about who my seat mates are.

If Spirit Airlines starts weighing passengers the entire fleet will be grounded.

As a sales man, I used to travel a lot in the US on regional carriers. Often, these were DASH-8’s or similar.

More than once passengers were asked to move up or back in order to get the best CG.

They never should have had Christie sit in the back. Never again.

If they don’t know what seat you are sitting in this is bogus for ‘weight distribution’

Along the lines of comedian James Gregory bit about being asked how much he weighed for an island hopper flight..

But in that bit, the passengers volunteer their weight and didn’t have to get on a scale..
