A Marine Corps helicopter that had been missing with five troops aboard as an historic storm continued drenching California was found Wednesday morning in a mountainous area outside San Diego.
The aircraft was located just after 9 a.m. by civil authorities near the mountain community of Pine Valley, about a 45-mile (72-kilometer) drive from San Diego but rescue crews said snowy conditions were making access challenging on the ground
They were "using ground and aviation assets to locate the aircrew in coordination with the San Diego County Sheriff's Department and multiple federal state and local agencies," the Marine Corps said in a statement.

There were five Marines on that aircraft.

The article NEVER says they crashed. For all I know the chopper landed safely and the crew was have capuccino in the mountains. Horrible journalism.
Maybe I’ve read too many Tom Clancy books, but don’t these things have beacons on them when they crash?
In any event, my prayers are up for the crew. I never liked those aircraft.
If one takes a straight line from the Nevada base to Miramar they were 20 miles off course. Pine Hills which is maybe seven miles south southwest of Julian would make more sense, assuming gps was working and they did not detour to miss a storm cell.
Now what would 5 Marines do...you would think....build a fire...
FWIW the winds through there can be treacherous particularly during storms.
Army soldiers. Air Force airmen. Navy sailors. Marine marines. Coast Guard coasties. Generically, we were all troops.
What about the missing F-35?
Sailors are not troops. Marines are not troops. That is a term for soldiers.

They were Marines until they screwed up. Then they were jarheads.
So the military helicopter they were using is not good for all weather conditions???
I’ll have to speak to a relative of mine who works for the company that makes the Blackhawk helicopter, and see what he makes of the downed Marine copter that couldn’t navigate in the rain storm. I guess it is not so much the rain as the air turbulence you can have in a heavy rain storm. Maybe.

Most journalism is. I don’t think any of them are the brightest candles in the cave. Their primary agenda is propaganda, not writing fact filled stories. I rate lower than politicians.
I want to know why they were flying in that weather and who authorized the flight.
With a couple thousand pounds of jet fuel....they could spell SEMPER FI on the side of the mountain with flames 10 feet high.
