Wicked, the upcoming big-screen adaptation of the beloved Broadway show that is a prequel to The Wizard of Oz, received its first trailer at Super Bowl LVIII.
It's a dreamy trailer that gives us our first real look at a cinematic take on one of the most beloved musicals of the last few decades. Of course, the footage also serves as an introduction to some of the music the prequel is known for.
Wicked, which will be a two-part theatrical event, is set to fly into theaters for the first time on November 27, 2024. Wicked: Part Two is currently slated for November 26, 2025.
The film is being directed by Jon M. Chu and stars Cynthia Erivo as Elphaba Thropp, who is better known as the Wicked Witch of the West. Ariana Grande will be joining her as Glinda Upland a.k.a. Glinda the Good. Also joining the cast will be Jonathan Bailey as Fiyero Tigelaar, Jeff Goldblum as the Wonderful Wizard of Oz, Ethan Later as Boq, and Michelle Yeoh as Madame Morrible.
This trailer was a much-anticipated one as we’ve only seen glimpses of both Elphaba and Glinda and that’s about it. What we did know, however, is that The Wicked film is an adaptation of the 2003 Broadway musical with music and lyrics from Stephen Schwartz and book by Winnie Holzman. The play is based on the 1995 Gregory Maguire novel Wicked: The Life and Time of the Wicked Witch of the West, and that is a prequel of sorts for L. Frank Baum’s 1900 novel The Wonderful Wizard of Oz and the 1939 film from Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer.

I saw it on Broadway in 2009, but it wasn’t woke. It was pretty good then.
“The WIZ” starred Michael Jackson, Diana Ross and Richard Pryor and Nipsey Russell and it couldn’t break even.
People don’t like ‘woke’ garbage on either side of the coin...............
I was looking forward to seeing this movie but, as usual, democraps destroy everything and want to seriously create sadness, hardship and angst for everyone.
Broadway is one thing, but theatrical films are a totally different thing. New Yorkers will go see a new show just to have something to talk about at the office.
If they don’t sell in Poughkeepsie or Peoria they are toast.............

Think a big part of the problem with the movie was they had Diana Ross, who had to be what, 40 years old? playing Dorothy. I’m sure they explained that in some way, but come on, it’s annoying.
It was a big hit on Broadway, and I did see it. Very good show, good songs and choreography. The Wizard of Oz is a made up story, I don’t really care if you change the cast to all Black or whatever. I’m sure some black people lived in Kansas at that time, so why not, really?
The TV Live version was quite good. Sorry, forget what channel it was on, NOT Fox I don’t think. The only cast member I recall is Nee-Yo (sp?) who played the Tin Man. Think he’s actually a rapper, but he was quite good. Whoever played Dorothy was OK too. Don’t really remember any of the other performers.

I generally don’t care for the film versions of Broadway shows. There are a few exceptions, such as “My Fair Lady,” “The Sound of Music” and I think the more recent adaptation of “Chicago” was pretty decent, but overall, they seem to lose something in the transition.
Of course, Broadway isn’t putting out much quality theater anymore these days.
I had no clue what that Wicked trailer was about, and probably half the commercials I saw in the Super Bowl.
Like the one with Jennifer Lopez, Ben Affleck, and Tom Brady. No clue. Or Christopher Walken? Car commercial?
I remember once there was a computer commercial, that I was clueless about. The next day, it was revealed that no one in the country had a clue what it was about.
Isn’t is “Racist” to cast a Black woman as the “Wicked” Witch....and THEN, paint her as Green?!?!?
