I was a wage slave my entire career. But I kicked in 8% into my 401(k) for 30 years knowing that when I retired, I’d be better off financially than when I was working at the top of my pay grade with annual raises of $500. PER YEAR.

I’ve been retired now for two years. Do I miss the hour and a half commute? EACH WAY? Take a guess.

“Do I miss the hour and a half commute? “

My daily commute is now a five mile, 10 minute commute to the local National Forest to have my cardio rehab dog trainer take me me for a couple of miles hike and then drive 5 miles back to the compound.

As always, YMMV.

[...] with annual raises of $500. PER YEAR.

You poor devil! What an insult! In what kind of industry do they try to placate you with such measly raises?

Regards,

“[W]age slave” is a post WWII category. A luxury. If you had been born prior to then you would have been scraping out a living on your own without employer provided health insurance, employer provided vacations, no paid holidays, etc.
