As far as I know, quartz is mostly inert.............

Probably trace minerals mixed with the quartz. The glaciers really grind rock up to a very fine silt called "rock flour." It appears cloudy in the water and is also called "glacial milk." Glacial lakes have the most amazing color.

Here is one of the lakes at Joffre Lakes Park in British Columbia (a fantastic hike!)
