The main good reasons were (a) neither Britain nor France were democracies, and (b) in spite of ending British rule over us, we were essentially weak, in a global sense, compared to Britain and France. Later on when we had become strong we quit our isolationism when it comes to how our military was used - our wars with Mexico and Spain, our subjgation of the Philippines instead of supporting their independence and our bullying Japan to open trade with us. You can request a publicly releasable copy of an individual’s military record by sending a Standard Form 180, Request Pertaining to Military Records, to the National Personnel Records Center.
I know a guy who used this to go after a large number of “Stolen Valor” freaks, liars and con artists.
He exposed some who told grand tales even though they never finished basic training as well as many who never even served. The saddest were the ones who served honorably but decided they had to make up crazy-ass stories.
