Fawcett’s claim was met with derision from the scientific community at the time. That is pretty much the response you get to first reports of any explorer.
Take the reports of the guys who first saw the Amazon.
It is fashionable to think that our ancestors had nothing better to do then sit around having fever dreams and writing them down using equipment that was not user friendly.

“Fawcett’s claim was met with derision from the scientific community at the time.”
Why? Did they have reason to expect that Fawcett was a moron? Why wouldn’t t they say “Hmmm, I wonder what this is all about”? Hell the possibility of a giant anaconda might have been good for fundraising and more trips to the region for, you know, scientists. Those dull witted scientists could be the morons.

Scientist can be a pack of backbiting bitches. They often turn on one another just for bloodsport, not science.
Percy Fawcett’s reputation as a scientist was severely damaged when he claimed that there was a two nosed dog kept by tribes the Amazon. It went a long way towards ruining his career. Within the past few years, however, the 2 nosed dog was found in proven to be a reality.
Here is a picture of the formally cryptid dog

62-foot-long anaconda he and his companions claimed to have shot and killed.

We had a job out between Maturin, Venezuela and the coast to the east. The chopper flight offered good opportunity to observe the swamp and jungle. I’d sit in the door and look, saw what looked like snakes but never could be sure. Should have been plenty to eat since I saw lots of Capybara.
