GWINNETT COUNTY, Ga. — Police have charged a woman after they say a viral video showed her son riding in an open car trunk while she was driving.

Gwinnett County police said they received reports about the video on Sunday. The video appeared to show a 12-year-old boy in the back of a gray Dodge Challenger holding a baby bassinet, but it was unclear where the woman was driving.

On Monday, a detective used the FLOCK camera database and placed the car in the area of Pleasant Hill Road and Shackleford Road on Sunday.

Police identified the car owner as 36-year-old Diane Shaffer. The mother told Gwinnett County police she had purchased the baby bassinet after she saw an online ad for it.

She went to pick up the item and said her son was sitting in the Challenger’s trunk to hold the item. Police charged Shaffer with reckless driving and seatbelt violation and placed her son with family members before she was booked on Tuesday.

Shaffer is out on bond.

“The explanation we had was the item could not fit in the backseat of her car, it could only fit in the trunk and she had used her son to hold the object down,” Sgt. Michele Pihera said. “The woman told our investigators his feet were actually in the backseat of the car, meaning the back seat was laid down and it was only his upper body torso that was actually in the trunk.”

I'm guessing she was behind the wheel.

Oh please. Growing up it was cool to go riding in the trunk of the car.

I didn’t die from it.

Ok Karen. Life is life and sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do. It's still legal in many states to ride in the back of the pick up truck with no seatbelts whatsoever.

Make sure to wrap yourself up in bubble wrap before you go outside.

Yes, certainly an unfortunate way to have written that......however, quality journalism has on life support in this country for a while now.

Fear cripesake! Stuff like this used to be commonplace in the pre-Pearl clutching days. The kid was safer than riding a bike. In some families, kiids riding in the bed of a pickup was done every day..

We crammed the truck full of kids to get into the drive-in movies.

Growing up rural is so cool. When I was 13 my grandma let me drive about a mile 1/2 down the road to krogers to get staples because she couldn’t see well enough to drive. She figured if I could drive tractor I could drive a car. And she was right.

I first thought that there was a baby in the bassinet.....overall it seems a bit over zealous karens getting their panties in a twist over this....

was it a good idea?...no...but hardly making a breathless report about it...

Yes, this is ridiculous. If the baby had been in it, that would have been another matter…but a kid riding in the trunk? Ridiculous.

Too bad she wasn’t driving him in the trunk to gender reassignment surgery. Then it would have been alright.

Just as an aside... every vehicle I own has several bungy cords in them for this very reason. You never know when you might buy something for which they will be very handy. Having said that, the story is ridiculous.

The shocking thing about this story is how the police tracked down and arrested this woman.

It’s so “Fahrenheit 451” like. Just need a robot dog with a hypo.

So, if a drunk had rerended her car at a stop light squishing that kid like a grape.....you’d be alright with that?

Because the police will charge anyone: they're rewarded for making arrests, any arrest, justified or not.

I just watched a video of some kids cleaning up trash in a city park. They discovered a pistol and called the cops. The cops show up, they show them the pistol in the mud, and the cops start hemming them in demanding to know their names and asking what they were doing, even though they told the dispatcher, they've got gloves on, are dirty, and have bags full of trash. Guess the cops hadn't passed their detective exams.

Back of a pickup at highway speeds.
Trunk of a car.
Truck with flatbed, no sides.
Might kill me one of theses days. I’m 72.
