India approves three chip plants with over $15 billion in investments to realize semiconductor ambitions

* India has ambitions to become a major chip hub on the lines of the U.S., Taiwan and South Korea, and has been courting foreign firms to set up operations in the country.

* "Within a very short time, India Semiconductor Mission has achieved four big successes. With these units, the semiconductor ecosystem will get established in India," the government of India said in a press statement.

* India in June 2023 had approved Micron for setting up a semiconductor unit in Sanand, Gujarat.


India has approved building three semiconductor plants with investments of more than $15 billion as the country aims to become a major chip hub.

"India already has deep capabilities in chip design. With these units, our country will develop capabilities in chip fabrication. Advanced packaging technologies will be indigenously developed in India," according to a government statement on Thursday.

India has ambitions to become a major chip hub on the lines of the U.S., Taiwan and South Korea, and has been courting foreign firms to set up operations in the country.

Tata Electronics will partner Taiwan's Powerchip Semiconductor Manufacturing Corp to build one of the fabrication plants in Dholera, Gujarat, with an investment of nearly $11 billion (Rs.91,000 crore) , according to the statement.

PSMC provides chip design and manufacturing services in the logic and memory segments. It has six semiconductor foundries in Taiwan.

The factory will focus on the mature 28-nanometer technology, namely in industries such as automobiles, consumer electronics and defense. Mature technology refers to processes involved in making 28-nanometer or larger chips — generally considered legacy chips.

Tata Semiconductor Assembly and Test Pvt Ltd will set up the second plant in Morigaon, Assam, with an investment of $3.26 billion (Rs.27,000 crore),

I have one big concern with this; IIRC, India shares a common border with China.

It’s not like 40 years ago.

There are highly talented Asian Indians nowadays.

I believe you're living in the past, and it's a good thing that you are. With Taiwan under imminent threat of invasion by the PRC and with us pretty much guaranteed to do nothing to prevent it, we need as many other sources of chip manufacture around the world as we can get.

RE: mediocre talent in India.

If India has mediocre talent, explain to me how they are able to:

1) Develop an Orbiter that is even as we speak, circle Mars and study its surface and atmosphere from orbit at a total budget of ONLY $75 million ( less than what it costs to make a lot of big budget Hollywood films ).

2) Develop the Chandrayaan-3 mission that successfully demonstrated soft landing on the lunar surface and operate a rover to explore the terrain near the south pole of the Moon. All at the cost of only $73 Million.

Consider this — India has 1.4 Billion people ( more than 4 times our population ). If only 5% of that are extremely talented ( like the Indian CEOs of some of our most successful high tech companies ), that’s 70 million talented people! Nearly 20 times the number of people living in Silicon Valley.

That’s the answer right there. Numbers. But remember, China has close to the same numbers.
