Two suspects in custody after DC Housing Authority officer shot in broad daylight

Two suspects, a male and a female, are in the custody of D.C. police after an officer-involved shooting in the southeast part of Washington.

The shooting was reported around 5:45 a.m. at Carroll Apartments on 410 M Street SE, near Navy Yard, D.C. Housing Authority Chief of Police Michael Reese said.

Reese said a veteran male officer was on regular patrol in the area when he encountered the two suspects, who were asked to leave the building. The armed male suspect opened fire on the officer, hitting him in the torso.

Reese said the suspects fled to a nearby building in the 900 block of U Street, NW, where the gunman barricaded himself with the female suspect. After several hours, both suspects were taken into custody.

Housing Authority Police and officers with the Metropolitan Police Department worked together to make the arrests. The large police response closed several roads in the area and prompted a two-hour delay at nearby Van Ness Elementary School, FOX 5 DC reported.

Thursday's shooting is the second time in four months that a Housing Authority police officer has been injured in a shooting, according to the Washington Post.

In October, an off-duty housing officer was shot on New York Avenue in Northeast Washington, the paper reported.

Wait! How can this be? Guns are not allowed in the hands of private citizens in D.C. There is a law! This story can’t be right!!!

This article is a mess….0545 is not “broad daylight.” M St SE is nowhere near U St. NW….so how did the suspects flee from M St SE to a “nearby building” on U St NW?

There is no U St SW, and even U St SE is over the 11th St Bridge or I-695 and almost 2miles from VN Elementary….

The original scene is only about five blocks from Nationals Park. I haven’t been back there since 2019.

U St NE is also pretty far away, up by Rhode Island and N Capitol St. Who knows what really happened with this story — I think there’s more questions from it than answers.

No pics, of course.

MSN left a bit out, didn’t they.

That apartment building is senior housing.

Crime is out of control in D.C. I know the owners of a once popular restaurant near Howard University who are planning close because business has declined sharply because of it. The cause is more than demographics: if you compare the violent crime rate of D.C. to that of Northern Virginia, particularly the Route 1 section of Alexandria, which is just across the river and with similar demographics, you would see that D.C.’s violent crime rate is many times higher.
