North Carolina State Senior Owen Lloyd posted the fastest time in the men's 1650 yard Freestyle, earning him the ACC Title, an automatic entry to the National Championships, and a new best time. Moments later, an announcement was made that Lloyd had been disqualified for "interference with another swimmer."
The rule(s) at play from the NCAA rulebook: - Rule 2, Section 5, Article 1a: "Any competitor who interferes with another swimmer during a race shall be disqualified from that race, subject to the discretion of the referee..." - Rule 2, Section 5, Article 1b: "A swimmer who changes lanes during a heat shall be disqualified."

There was no 'interference' as the race was over and the swimmer in that lane was done.
So he left his lane before the last person finished? Though the person in the lane he went to was finished. Kind of rough, like signing an incorrect card in golf. Picayune, but thems the rules.
He definitely deserves disqualification because of his white privilege!
He crossed lanes, but the race was already over. Kinda dumb.
Wow. I don’t follow this sport at all, but this is asinine.
He was disqualified for THAT?
Waiting for the other swimmers to complete the race before leaving your lane seems like a reasonable requirement — and simple good sportsmanship.
I was very impressed with his teammate.
A real man.
The real winner may not have the medal officially, but he does have respect and a real friend, and sounds like he will end up with the physical medal too.
I would like to see the person who invoked and approved this penalty.
I have one word for him... “LAWYER”.
I have to disagree with you on this.
I can see that’s a bit of a challenge, because you really can’t tell anybody but the lanes next to you. Maybe there’s a light or a flag or something. But yeah in the end the rule is pretty clear “don’t leave your lane while the heat is still going”. It sucks in this case because of the record and implications for nationals and whatever, BUT, that’s the rules man. We’ve seen plenty of other people get records and... well... stay in their lane. So there it is.
Probably a wokester who was triggered, that he broke the record by 4 seconds.
It would be interesting to see if this disqualified swimmer ever made any negative public statements about men who pretend to be women so they could compete against women.
It would also be interesting to see the people who put their heads together in this case and disqualified him, to see what kinds of things they have said in support of men who compete against women.
Oh please, if you had the swim of your life and shattered the record by 4 seconds, one is supposed to twiddle their thumbs?
The heat isn’t over until all swimmers finish the race. The referee(s) weren’t incorrect.
But they WERE wrong.
Yeah, I’m guessing he won’t do that again.
“Subject to the discretion of the referee…”
Neither of those rules actually applies. The first is not even close.
So what actions are there for the swimmer to carry out to continue in the heat?
The cited rules don’t actually address what the referees enforced.
I thought it was very clear. The heat is not over until all swimmers have have reached the end.
