Red light can reduce blood glucose levels, says study (15 minutes = 28% drop in blood glucose)
Medical Xpress / City University London / Journal of Biophotonics ^ | Feb. 21, 2024 | Michael B. Powner et al

Researchers have found that 670 nanometers (nm) of red light stimulated energy production within mitochondria, leading to increased consumption of glucose. In particular, it led to a 27.7% reduction in blood glucose levels following glucose intake, and it reduced maximum glucose spiking by 7.5%.

Mitochondria provide energy for vital cellular processes, using oxygen and glucose to produce the energy-rich nucleoside adenosine triphosphate (ATP). Previous research has established that long-wavelength light between approximately 650–900 nm (spanning the visible through to the near-infrared range) can increase mitochondrial production of ATP which reduces blood glucose and also improves health/lifespan in animals.

To explore the impact of 670 nm red light on blood glucose, the researchers recruited 30 healthy participants, who were then randomized into two groups: 15 in the 670 nm red light group, and 15 in the placebo (no light) group.

Dr. Powner said, "Our study has shown that we can use a single, 15-minute exposure to red light to reduce blood sugar levels after eating. While this has only been done in healthy individuals in this paper, it has the potential to impact diabetes control going forward, as it could help to reduce potentially damaging glucose spikes in the body after meals."

Professor Jeffery said, "Sunlight has a balance between red and blue, but we now live in a world where blue light is dominant because although we do not see it, LED lights are dominant in blue and have almost no red in them. This reduces mitochondrial function and ATP production. Hence our internal environments are red-starved. Long-term exposure to blue light is potentially toxic without red. Blue light on its own impacts badly on physiology and can drive disrupted blood sugars that may in the long run contribute to diabetes and undermine health spans.

These lights were used for just 15 minutes. An oral glucose tolerance test was given and was blood was drawn every 15 minutes over the next few hours. Blood glucose dropped 27.7%.

Red lights emitting in these frequencies are available from various places, but it’s not clear that one would want much exposure to the eyes. The test with mice used their backs and this test with humans didn’t have a working link to review.

I can see this helping prove why sunbathers can physically enjoy tanning so much, but UV rays, which are different wavelengths from these, are damaging to the skin.

Red light as a few wavelengths is reputed to have many health benefits.

YMMV.

“UV rays, which are different”

So is this saying I can get this benefit by going out in the sun ...?

Or do I need to get a “red” light ...?

Where do you get a red light ?

“Where do you get a red light ?”

Start with Amazon. They work for strained muscles and tendons, for sure. It was amazing.

Well, in that case, I’ll go out for a drive in the city. Sit in traffic at enough red lights, and NO CHANCE of diabetes!

Have only incandescent bulbs in house.

Is it the effect on skin or the light’s brain effects via eyes. Or combination?

I have a prism hanging in a window. Sometimes it shoots off a rred light and I try to stand in it for as long as it lasts. It’s been an instinctive move, but now I know why.

I know someone who had one.

My best friend’s grandfather, who I occasionally met, got one and used it. My friend told me his grandfather used it on himself and coughed up some dark substance, afterward.

As an early teen, I told him it was quackery and that he really needed to get to a doctor, as there was no known way anything “light” could make that happen.

Maybe I, and “medical science,” were wrong.

In the United States, our liberty should extend to colored light bulbs and we should not fear something like an American Medical Association that will be the reason your company goes out of business or that you are arrested.

People should meet on the battlefield of ideas. Legal issues should only occur between people directly hurt.
