The city of Denver is shutting several of its migrant shelters and officials are asking local property owners to house some of the "newcomers" who need a place to stay.
Denver Mayor Mike Johnston recently announced that the city has started to scale back its migrant services with the goal of reducing the current budget deficit by nearly $60 million and reallocating those funds back into city services. The move sees shelters being shuttered and existing shelters consolidated.
Jon Ewing, with Denver Human Services, told Fox 31 that the city is looking for alternative ways to house its illegal immigrants.
"We put out a feeler to all the landlords we have connections with," Ewing said. "Basically said, listen, we’re going to have some newcomers who are going to need housing."
Fox 31 reports that the city recently emailed Denver rental property owners asking if they would be interested in renting to migrants who need housing.
"We’ve got kind of a rent cap — $2,000," Ewing said.
He said the effort is being supported by locally operating non-profits who have already connected migrants with various forms of housing, with thousands making their way out of shelters.
"We’re at below 1,800 right now, which is the first time that number’s been that low since September," Ewing said.
That number was as high as 4,500 people as recently as January. Before, migrants were posting on social media in search of a home.
The move comes after a Massachusetts couple last month volunteered to take in illegal immigrants and was surprised when a family of four showed up at the doorstep less than an hour after signing up.Earlier this year.
Venezuelans make up the vast majority of those that have arrived in the city since 2023, according to the Colorado Sun.

They can’t pass a background check or a credit check And don’t have three times the rent in income. Next!
Anything less than enforcing the standard rules you enforce on all tenants creates a separate class of people who are more equal than others.
How many illegal unwanted newcomers will the mayor be hosting? That’s what I thought
Exactly, he’s all talk and no action.
Oddly, consequence of certain political stances and policies are coming home to roost. And cost a bundle. Nice Denver voters, keep voting Democrat. Pretty soon they’ll be billeting “newcomers” by force of law.
And we promise never to suspend rent payments...never, ever...unless, well, there’s an outbreak of pandemic proportions. But, hey...what are the chances of that happening?
Today Denver is asking. But after passing a few specialized “fair housing” regulations they will be requiring.
Vote communist, get communism. It really is that simple.
Is that before they start looking at your living situation and decide you WILL take in some indigents? Just because you worked hard to get what you have doesn’t mean you can’t share.
Let the dimbulb-crats pay for the migrants. THEY brought them, THEY can pay for them. The rest of us want to help vets, give work to folks with talent (woke does NOT equal talent, not even close), and have a trustable military that does not think that sickos who get off on cross-dressing are worthy of military service.
As a small-time landlord I would far rather take in Satan Incarnate than one of these illegals.
Start with some government offices. Put cots in every municipal government office. Lead by example...
How about they all go stay at the mayors house
They’re going to have to get rid of the constitution first.
The Third Amendment said the government can’t quarter troops in your home.
It didn’t specify American troops.
Whether it’s troops from Britain, Communist China, Venezuela, or a foreign cartel it doesn’t matter.
(It’s quite certain some of the “newcomers” are combatants.)
Once they’re in, they will never pay another penny of rent and you will never be able to evict them.
Yep. Thousands and thousands of military/para-military illegals are flooding our country. Chinese agents, cartel members, etc. But the 3A won’t help.
Here’s a copy-and-paste post of mine from another thread:
Unfortunately, the 3A wouldn’t apply here. Back in 2011 some Nevada police simply took over a guy’s house. The cops wanted to use the house for surveillance. The guy objected. Too bad, said the police.
The guy sued the cops in federal court, on 3A grounds. He lost. The judge said that the 3A applies to soldiers, and only to soldiers.
“rent” to squatters.
(formerly known as “migrant newcomers”)
“newcomers” now?
Doesn’t that sound all benign and innocent?
NO!
There’s not enough housing for American citizens and vets.
If we don’t have the room, send them back home. The places they left were vacated.
There's a difference?
"deplorables" out
...the "all new" outsourcing of Americans.
Someone should write a book.
Would anyone (be allowed to) publish it?
