Lady Godiva was a freedom rider, She didn't care if the whole world looked, Joan of Arc with the Lord to guide her, She was a sister who really cooked, Isadora was the first bra-burner, Ain't ya glad she showed up? (Oh yeah!) And when the country was fallin' apart, Betsy Ross got it all sewed up.

Isadora was the first bra-burner,

I'm an amateur history buff, but I still don't know who Isadora was.

Give me some slack, it's Saturday night.

I did not care for the show, but it was a great theme song!

Fun fact: Bea Authur (Maude) was a Woman Marine during WW2. All credit to her!

But Arthur never talked about her USMC service. Did she think it would hurt her career in liberal Hollywood? Or did something bad happen while she was serving, and she didn’t want to revisit it? No one really knows.

She was brutally raped by one of her superior officers when she was in the Marines. She contracted a sexually transmitted disease and was discharged as a result. She was too traumatized to report it.

The phrase “Isadora was the first bra-burner” is a reference to Angela Isadora Duncan, an American dancer who was born in 1877 or 1878 and died on September 14, 1927. She spent most of her adult life in Western Europe and the Soviet Union. There is no evidence that she ever burned a bra in her life, but she was definitely a free spirit and made a huge impact on dance. The phrase has been misheard in the song “And Then There’s Maude” by Donny Hathaway. The phrase has also been referenced in British singer Pete Doherty’s song “Salome.”

I love, love LOVE the dialogue between Archie and Maude....

Archie Bunker : Well, let me tell you one thing about Richard E. Nixon. He knows how to keep his wife, Pat, home. Roosevelt could never do that with Eleanor. She was always out on the loose. Running around with the coloreds. Tellin’ ‘em they was gettin’ the short end of the stick. She was the one who discovered the coloreds in this country; we never knew they was there!

Archie Bunker : Roosevelt sold us out to Joe Stalin at Gibraltar.

Maude : They met at Yalta.

Archie Bunker : He sold us out there too.

Archie Bunker : [Maude refuses to get out of Archie’s chair] Well, I got the secret weapon that can lay this little lady right away. Here we go. This country was ruined by Franklin Delano Roosevelt!

Cousin Maude : You’re fat.

Archie Bunker : Sticks and stones may break my bones, but Franklin Delano Roosevelt...

Edith Bunker : Archie, you promised never to say that name again in front of Maude.

Archie Bunker : Franklin Delano Roosevelt!

Edith Bunker : [to Maude] He don’t mean nothing. His whole family was for Roosevelt.

Archie Bunker : That was for two terms. But that was it. We didn’t know the guy was going to hold on to the job like a pope!

Tikes! If not for the little USMC pins, that could be a mugshot or booking foto.

Dave Grusin also wrote the theme songs to It Takes A Thief and The Name Of The Game. And many other great songs not so well known.
