May not all that uncommon, but apparently enough to terminate the flight and bring the aircraft back to the shop with an aircraft full of frightened and or pissed off passengers.
Btw, I didn’t’ see anything written about a compressor stall. But I guess one noise is enough to diagnose jet aircraft engine issues.
Compressor stall is the #1 cause of a jet engine “bang” & fire out the back. Commercial passenger aircraft (Part 121) will always return to the gate after a compressor stall for a maintenance check/plane swap...military & private jets have a checklist for it and may continue the flight after a return to “idle” thrust and re-application of power.
