Phillies and Braves are experiencing climate change firsthand, and it may affect their play

The Phillies and the Atlanta Braves reputedly are among the elite teams of major-league baseball, but if the quality of play at Citizens Bank Park during their season-opening series doesn’t quite measure up to expectations, go gentle on the booing.

These players are experiencing a form of abrupt climate change, says Struan Coleman, a sports medicine specialist who practices in New York and Philly.

When the Phillies left Clearwater, Fla., after their final spring training game Monday, the high was 83 degrees, and daily highs since the team began playing their practice games in Florida on Feb. 25 have averaged about 80.

By contrast, when the teams take the field Friday, after Thursday’s rainout, the air temperatures will be in the mid-50s, with the air holding well less than half the moisture of those spring-training sites.

One comprehensive study documented that such a degree of coolness can affect the quality of play. The early season can be particularly challenging for hitters. “It’s more about the cold rather than the rustiness,” study co-author Brandon Koch, a statistics professor at the University of Minnesota, said Tuesday.

While temperature may benefit pitchers, cold may have had a downside for their control: They issued more walks when it was chilly.

“Climate in baseball is incredibly important,” said Coleman, who practices at the Vincera Institute in Philadelphia, “and something that should be looked at and discussed more carefully.” He added that he would like to interest the Phillies in an analysis of the relationship of weather and sports injuries.

There’s only one answer for this...taxpayer-funded, temperature controlled, indoor fields

Personally, as long as the hotdogs are hot and the beer is cold, IGAS what the temperature is on the field.

Buncha whiners.

Just wow!

Who would figure that early spring temperatures would be lower in Philly than in Tampa?

But now we are told that phenomenon is evidence for anthropomorphic global warming.

I wonder how much common sense the author had to jettison us o make that conclusion.

We have experienced extreme climate change where I live.
Since just last August the average temps are 50 degrees cooler.
All the trees lost their leaves and look dead .
This IS VERY SERIOUS.

What is it they call those enthusiastic, young men who play baseball? Hmmm...ah yes...”The Boys of Summer.” Summer is when it gets hot, is it not? Struan Coleman is a quack.

Ouch!

I just rolled my eyes back so hard I think I’ve injured myself.

Do you think I might get a large cash settlement?

It’s a beautiful day in Htown today. I wonder if they’ll have the roof open at Minute Maid Park for the Astros vs Yankees?

The owners did away with Double Headers, which use to be fairly common, now they start earlier in the year in order to avoid double headers and sell every ticket to every game at premium prices.

Years ago, even the MLB all-star game was a double header.

Adverse effects going from 83 to mid-50s? Oh noes! Where exactly was Dr. Buffoon in January when the Dolphins experienced a difference of over a hundred degrees from 80 in Miami to -9 in KC with a wind chill of -30?

Meantime, yes, it does affect you going from warm temps in spring training—which oddly occurs mostly in winter except for the temps in Florida and Arizona—to colder temps in northern areas, but as experienced athletes with super duper training staffs, it should not be the slightest concern for them. Well, the yentas on The View will be yammering about it, for sure.

The Babylon Bee could have fun with every team and sport.

The article is beyond raw stupidity—propaganda at its silliest.

I guess the idiot scribbler was told by his boss to wiggle climate change into a story that has nothing to do with it.

Wait a minute, you’re telling me that it’s warmer in Florida than in Pennsylvania? Maybe that could explain why there are no palm trees north of the Carolina’s!

This is not news & man doesn’t control the climate. We can only try to adapt to it & there’s no reason for the gov’t. collecting taxes for that.

We’ve been through this crap many, many moons ago already when the woman’s bathing suit fashion magazine, Sports Illustrated had a cover of some meathead ball player standing in water up to his waist in some baseball park. That was some dumb crap those days too. Never happened.
