Erdogan vows to make amends after humbling election loss in Turkey

ISTANBUL, April 1 (Reuters) - President Tayyip Erdogan vowed on Monday to correct any mistakes that led to his party's defeat in Turkey's local elections where the opposition capitalised on economic woes and alienated Islamist voters, casting uncertainty over his reform plans. Sunday's vote marked Erdogan and his AK Party's (AKP) worst defeat in more than 20 years in power, revitalising the opposition party and strengthening Istanbul Mayor Ekrem Imamoglu's standing as the president's main rival. Redrawing a political map long dominated by the AKP, the Republican People's Party (CHP) won the popular vote for the first time in decades and swept most of the main cities, penetrating far into conservative central Turkey. Analysts said voters lost patience with both a cost-of-living crisis driven by near 70% inflation and Erdogan's divisive political style. The result bruised his hopes of adopting a new constitution, which could potentially extend his rule beyond 2028 when his term ends, they said. Though AKP and its allies have a majority in parliament, Erdogan would need broader support or a successful referendum for a new constitution. Erdogan delivered a sombre and introspective speech in the early hours of Monday. "This is not an end for us, but actually a turning point," he said, acknowledging a "loss of altitude" for the AKP. "If we made a mistake, we will fix it," he told crowds gathered at AKP headquarters in Ankara, without indicating what changes he might make within his party or in policy. In response, Turkish stocks rose and the lira - which has shed more than 80% of its value in five years - touched another record low versus the dollar on a holiday for many world financial markets.

Turkey is running a 70% inflation rate, and the central bank raised the policy rate by 500 basis points to 50% on March 21.

The surprisingly successful opposition party is Republican People's Party, the secularist party founded by Kemal Atatürk and ousted by Erdogan's Justice and Development Party in 2014.

Unless I have completely misread Erdogan’s past, I believe lessons are about to be taught all across the country as people who have aggressively and successfully opposed him begin to experience the reality of mortality.

Although Erdogan supports Muslims it’s really like he’s appealing to the more conservative elements of his population. The ones who run against him are the globalists who want to bring the perversion of the west to Turkey. We visited Turkey a year ago...what a breath of fresh air. No trannies. No tattooed blue hair freaks. No ghetto culture. It was like America in the 60’s.

May Trump win in a landslide victory- Given the debacle of the left power trip the last 4 years- by all rights Trump should dominate- but then again “Free Oblama phones” is pretty enticing to low info folks

Turkey is still the sick man of Europe. The problem is the rest of Europe is trying really hard to be sick in other ways.

Turkey is running at a 90% anti Israel, pro Palastinian rate. Erdogan whipped them up at the beginning of the Gaza campaign and did not follow through on his promises of retaliation. I wonder what Erdogan will do now?

Statements by dictators about “making amends” usually means a purge is coming where the “amend” problem arose.

Getting rid of the Islamonazi style dictatorship in Turkey will hopefully enable the good Turks to select a peaceful, non-aggressive government

It’s far too risky for Turkey yo continue under the thumb of such a dangerous islamicist as Erdogen. Otherwise we need to remove our air bases (and nuclear missiles) from there and expel him from nato

“”””It was like America in the 60’s.”””””

Superficially a lot of places can look like other places, even places in America look like the 50s/60s America but Turkey is nothing like that 50/60s America.

Interesting, somber can be spelled this way.

On the contrary, I’ve heard from expats who retired there saying it was a great place to live and very affordable. Personally I wouldn’t go over there now because of the general situation in the region, but if things ever settle down I might check it out.
