Been through it last November. My Rufus, 60 pound red Standard poodle, was my best buddy. Nearly 15, just old…. His rapid decline over a period of about 2 weeks told me it was time. We went several times a week to a local non-Starbucks coffee house 2-3 times a week, where he was almost like a mascot. I still miss my best buddy.
So sorry. I have been through this more than once, and it never gets easier.

My thought process on animals is this, life doesn’t just happen. It takes a miracle to make something alive. It takes a living spirit.
I am pretty sure that God has better things to do than to spend time on trillions of miracles every hour of every day when something alive physically dies and needs replaced. It just doesn’t seem to make sense to me that God is creating all these spirits of insects, mammals, fish, etc over and over and over.
I also think that the Bible says things for a reason, as in the statement “it is appointed unto men once to die, and then judgement”. Why would God take the time to tell us that? Why would God have not said “it is appointed for all to die once, and then judgement? That seems to me to be saying that other things besides “men” may not be “appointed” that way at all.
I also think that there are some beliefs held by some people that, while biblically wrong, may have been sparked by some shred of truth...as in reincarnation. While obviously clearly wrong for mankind from a biblical perspective, the shred of truth in it may just be that everything else that is indeed merely physically alive, except mankind, has this happen.
Therefore, it seems quite possible to me that an animals spirit which makes it physically alive may just be what animal it is physically alive in at that moment in time from our perspective, and that it has been alive in previous incarnations in the past and will be again in the future.
What is really interesting to me about animals is how each one can have a wholly different demeaner about them. I think that also has something to do with what we call “instinct” and with what the Bible refers to as in everything producing after its own kind, and them being reincarnated.
My heart goes out to you. Here’s to the memory of Bailey, and all the other Good Boys we’ve been fortunate enough to have in our lives over the years!
It is something we all animal lovers have had to do. I was raised on a farm where such things had to be done quite often, but putting down a sick farm animal is quite different than putting down a loyal house pet. I had to do the same a few weeks ago. I still miss my little dogs and cats from the past.
That is why I do not watch movies like THE YEARLING, OLD YELLER or WHERE THE RED FERN GROWS.
Only thing worse is seeing your pet run over right in front of your eyes.
My point exactly. If it can’t be you then at least have somebody there who the pet likes.
If you get a new pet don’t make the mistake of expecting that pet to behave almost exactly like the old one. You’ll notice some similar personality traits but always remember, you’ll miss so much in the new pet if you do.
If you have other dogs and want to replace the departed one, try to get one nearly the same size as the rest. It’s not really a problem but it can lead to some awkward behavior. My girl has a Teacup Chihuahua named Cosmo. Her brother got a Labrador Retriever* named Rebel. Both are great dogs but I even joked with Cosmo that he now has a trainee. So being nine years old Cosmo taught Rebel everything including how to get in his people’s laps. Not bad when Rebel was a puppy but now that he’s full size it’s like having a miniature horse climbing up on you. Rebel doesn’t recognize that his size does does matter.
*Not great apartment dogs mostly due to size.
CrimsonTidegirl, Prayers for You and the Family for Your loss of Your Bailey. I know it's a tough decision You had to make but just remember that She is in a better place now and no longer in pain.
Its always heart breaking to let them go. We’ve been through it several times. Just remember the joy they brought into your life.
I’m sorry for your loss.
I’ve done this more times than I can count, and it never gets easier. My problem is I know what is coming and my little ones don’t, and it tears my heart out. I always give them their favorite treats, especially M&M’s and ice cream. I never take my hands off of them except when the Vet gives them the shot and then I whisper in their ears how sorry I am and how much I love them.
I will have quite the homecoming waiting for me on the other side of the Rainbow Bridge

Last Thursday I had to put my 14 year old black Labrador (Kamie) to sleep.
It’s very painful to go through this. 😔
My 2 Great Danes are still waiting for her to come back home. They’re truly grieving,too.

The affection that pets have for us has simplicity and sincerity. I have seen pets show jealousy if another person or pet gets attention and they do not. They also show hurt feelings if they feel they have been let down by someone's absence for a week or more. What pets want most of all is to be close and to enjoy affection and assurance from us -- just as we want the same from them.
If, as Christian faith confides in us, the human soul and the love we have for other people endures past death, then why should the same not also be true of the love between us and our pets? Since pets help us to express our human capacity to love and care for others, then why should that aspect of ourselves be absent in the afterlife? Or at least we can hope that is so, that the human soul may transform and draw the souls of our beloved animal companions along with us into eternity.
