The rise in mental illness can be attributed to the modern transportation, the closing of asylums, social programs, and the social media.

We're two generations past the point of where the mentally ill would have been more isolated, institutionalized, not given freebies to spend their days idly, and falling in with other mentally ill individuals and breeding.

Since the expansion of the internet and social media, add the ability to meet other mentally ill online as well.
