The original meaning of Boer is farmer--it's the Dutch word for farmer (cognate with German Bauer and English boor). Of course that doesn't mean that everyone called a Boer now actually is a farmer. A sizeable portion of the whites in South Africa are English-speaking rather than Afrikaans-speaking (and I think the so-called Coloureds typically speak Afrikaans, but could be wrong about that).

Met a young woman from South Africa (English, not Afrikaner) last fall who was in the US as an au pair but was planning to return to South Africa in February 2024 to go to college--did not appear to be afraid to go back.
