Greg Howells' wife told SFGATE she believes the playwright staged his own death
On a summer evening in 1997, a theater director headed out to hit a twilight round of golf in Carmel Valley, the wealthy oceanside town on California’s Central Coast. There was a gentle breeze rustling the oak trees and tall grass that evening, the sea air a mild 60 degrees.
Greg Howells played 12 holes and was never seen again. His cart was found on the 13th tee, with no balls remaining in his bag and some clubs thrown down on the grass. A script of Howell’s unproduced play, “Lazarus,” a comedic take on the biblical story of the man who was raised from the dead, was found in his car, abandoned in the golf course parking lot.
Howell’s disappearance led to much speculation. Some said the 42-year-old playwright was the target of a mob hit; maybe he escaped to Mexico, or was mauled on the fairway by a mountain lion. Perhaps he took his own life after receiving his sixth rejection letter from agents in Hollywood. His wife, comedian and actor Sherry Glaser, still believes that the director staged his own death.
“He had this master plan he’d been making for years, that he crafted just brilliantly,” Glaser told SFGATE. “A plan I would never, ever figure out.”
Glaser moved to California from Long Island as a teen to pursue a life in theater. In 1985, while working out her act at an improv theater in San Diego, she met a handsome law student named Greg at one of her shows. Howells had moved west from Ohio, where he had been an MVP tennis player and a keen high school athlete.

If it had happened in Florida I would say it was a monster Jurassic Alligator.
This has all the makings of an “Alfred Hitchcock Presents . . .” Somehow she would be the real killer.
I’m not sure why FL hasn’t opened season on alligators.
