A lot of inventions throughout history came out of China. Paper, gunpowder, pasta, the compass.

True. But how long ago are we talking about? What have they created since they became communist? What has China created since WW2 when the U.S. rescued China from being Japan's "comfort woman"?

True, but the same could have been said of Japan. When the Japanese were catching up with the West it was mostly using technologies that the West had already developed (the transistor radio was a special case, developed in the US and Japan at about the same time but first marketed in a big way by the Japanese). When Japan had caught up with the West, their economy became more troubled, but they became more inventive and innovative.

I was wrong about the transistor radio. The American inventors of the transistor had made a transistor radio in the 1940s, but it took years to make them commercial and mass-produced.
