Woman Falls to Her Death While Hiking in Sedona

Officials say a woman has died after she fell during a hike in Sedona, Arizona earlier this week.

Yavapai County Sheriff’s Office said they got a call Monday morning about a woman who had fallen off a 140-foot cliff on Bear Mountain. The woman was hiking with her 1-year-old child and her husband.

Other hikers in the area stopped after hearing yelling and found that the woman had been seriously injured, the sheriff’s office said. One of them called for help while another hiked down to the woman. The woman was still breathing when the hiker got to her, but she later died.

The sheriff’s office identified the woman as Zynad Joseph, 40, according to KNXV.

Authorities said the woman was visiting from California and was renting an Airbnb in the area at the time of the incident, KTVK reported.

Joseph’s husband and child were flown off the trail, KNXV reported. Both were not injured.

My wife and I went to Sedona for a weekend in 1984. Just out of town is a blind canyon, the road is at the rim level. Our dog was not well behaved and started exploring, scrambled down the canyon a few feet to a ledge with a sheer drop. We thought she was going to get stuck but she climbed out.

Along with the beauty of the great outdoors, there is some risk, especially if it involves places others don’t usually dare to tread. A tragic accident, but it goes with the thrill seeking and bragging rights of going off the beaten path. May she rest in peace and may her family find comfort in their loss.

“Did she get a selfie?”

The REAL QUESTION is whether she got it uploaded prior to her demise.

I am so terrified of heights I get vertigo watching a movie with somebody on the edge of a cliff, so I won’t ever be falling off of one because I will never get near one.

When I was young I had no fear of heights. Now that I’m older I can’t get near any heights... They scare the hell out of me so much that I’m sure it’s a phobia.

A one year old child? She probably was preoccupied with the baby.

Instead of her surroundings.

This isn’t one of the close in hikes that one would take with a toddler. This is up north of Boynton Pass Road like Vultre Arch. I saw a lot of ill prepared hikers in the south west.

Speaking of being unprepared, I had an acquaintance who was moving to Colorado. He was still on his journey when he passed a mountain trail and decided to take a hike with his dog. He was unaware that an early blizzard was on its way. His dog made it out OK. They found him in the spring.

Someone told me a long time ago that the word Sedona is Anodes spelled backwards, FWIW.

That said, I can’t imagine a more anguishing experience for a husband.

I’m the same. As a kid ,heights didn’t bother me at all. When we went to the World Trade Center I couldn’t go near a window, same with the top of Rockefeller Center. Grand Canyon I stood as far away from the edge as I could get. I can’t even stand to see other people in high places. Window seat on a plane, no problem.
The older I get, the worse it gets.
