Roger Goodell Mulls 18-Game Slate, Presidents Day Weekend Super Bowl

NFL commissioner Roger Goodell is mulling a future with 18 regular-season games, a Presidents Day weekend Super Bowl and a significant increase in international games.

Goodell, during an appearance on "The Pat McAfee Show" on Friday, shared his long-term vision, one that involves numerous changes to the season's current format.

Specifically, Goodell said he would embrace a schedule featuring 18 regular-season games and two preseason contests, a significant shift from the current 17 regular-season and three preseason games that was implemented in 2021.

"I think we're good at 17 now," Goodell said. "But, listen, we're looking at how we continue. I'm not a fan of the preseason." Then, gesturing toward a group of fans assembled nearby, Goodell said, "And I don't think these guys like it either." He continued: "The reality is, I'd rather replace a preseason game with a regular-season game any day. That's just picking quality. If we get to 18 and 2, that's not an unreasonable thing."

Adding an additional regular-season game could, theoretically, result in a second bye week being added, which would lengthen the regular season. But Goodell would welcome that, he said, as he envisions a Presidents Day weekend built around the Super Bowl on Sunday night.

"And then you have Monday off," Goodell said.

No steps toward any of the potential changes have been taken thus far. And it's important to note that changes to the length of the season would need to be collectively bargained with the NFL Players Association, as it was when the most recent labor deal was negotiated.

The move toward 17 games initially faced significant opposition from players, even after owners approved the deal. Prominent players such as New York Jets quarterback Aaron Rodgers pushed back publicly. The CBA ultimately passed with a slim majority in player balloting, 51.5% voting in favor.

Goodell also spoke about a future increase to the number of games played internationally, saying he envisions as many as 16 regular-season games being played abroad, perhaps, within the next 10 years. The NFL is adding additional international markets, including Brazil this year and Spain next year.

As for whether a team or division will ever be based overseas, Goodell seemed less certain.

"Will a franchise ever happen or a division?" he said. "Maybe. I think that's beyond 10 years though."

That makes one of us. I don't treat presidents like kings.

But look how many Freepers idolize the descendants of the kings we got rid of.

Well I’ll tell you this; I’m enough of a sports fan that I suggest I have some rules changes I would like to suggest. I think they are some changes we could make in certain sports that would make them more exciting you know?

Like in football, I would let all forty-five guys play at the same time. You know, what’s this s**t standing around watching the game? Get in there, put a helmet on and hurt somebody for Chrissakes, will you? You’re not getting paid to watch and never mind lining up, just grab the ball and run like a m**********r you know?

Another thing I would do in football, I would leave the injured on the field. Well they’re always talking about how it’s a big war going on out there. Fine, let the Red Cross come around and pick these _______s up.

The NFL are pussies. They should play a 162 game schedule like MLB baseball. Now those are real men.

The NFL provides the best advertising platform on the planet, and the owners will continue to make billions.

Harumph, the NFL has been going downhill ever since they changed the rules and allowed the forward pass.

Indoor stadiums and artificial turf was the beginning of the end. Football was meant to be played on grass in the elements.

I’m not sure making a game that didn’t count now count is a significant change. Adding or subtracting games might be a significant change.

It wasn’t the forward pass itself, it was changing the shape of the football. Make the football fatter, and it would make the long pass plays more interesting. They had to change the ball to make the forward pass what it is today.

It also means an approximately 6 month season. Means nfl football will be on all sports addicts minds for 1/2 year.
Hope nfl foot-er...passball dies a slow death....
Did you notice on first round...the picks were WR, QB, CB, OL, EDGE,. No RB, no C, no LB...change the game to 7 on 7, no tackling, flag football. Typical scores 84-81...lots of drunks cheering, and lots of post td, and pre kickoff advertising....yay..

Who cares?
With Pre-season games, they play 20 games anyway.

At least they are not tall, dark lesbians throwing a ball at a hoop.
I can’t care less what the NFL does.
I heard that the respect shown to Goodell at the DRAFT event was the ultimate.
He laughs to the Bank......
Why did I read this thread?
My bad..

Have you ever seen a preseason game? Most the players who actually play in the season only play a few plays at most. Most of the players in the preseason games are guys who will be low on the roster or not. Even on the team in the regular season. They usually have a quarterback like a tethered goat just for the preseason games.

It’s still Washington’s Birthday.

I don't think he would have supported the holiday. After all, he was a gentleman, not a king.

NFL is now not sport but a gambling syndicate bending the knee in fealty to the dollar, the euro and the fundamental transformation of America.

No, it's real. They actually compete in a sporting competition. And money is not involved at all. 😉

Eighteen games is about four games too many. The human body cannot stand up to that sustained level of punishment. It wasn't so long ago it was a 14 game season... then 16... now 17. And now 18? There must be a limit.

But as always with professional sports.... it's all about the $!

An old acquaintance once quoted me that .... professional sports is like professional sex: it has nothing to do with love, and it's all about the money.

What is stupid about extending the season? Players will compensate, coaches will compensate. Strategies will change. Shoot, better that these wealthy fools have to compete in more games, versus taking it easy in pre-season except for the ones trying to make the team.
Longer season equals more games that count. It will be OK.

Make the Super Bowl best of three. That will bring in the money but won't inconvenience many players.

Super Bowl LIX-A, Super Bowl LIX-B, Super Bowl LIX-C (if necessary).
