My wife is a dedicated junk hunter. Through her efforts my house has a nice collection of antiques found for next to nothing. And you would be amazed at how much money some people will gladly pay for something found at auction for pennies on the dollar. Stuff you or I would toss in the trash without thinking twice.

It's a nice side business. I have learned to love junk.

Much of the value of something comes from knowing what it is and what significance, if any, it has. An item which would, properly appraised, be worth $100,000 may rightly be judged, if unappraised, to be worth a fraction of that if making the appraisal itself requires substantial effort by experts.
