Methinks the editors get a little off-topic with the APOD at times...
Still, it's a great shot. Notice the blue-black sky. Not much air!
Astronomy Fun Fact:
The air pressure at the summit of Everest is around 300 millibars
(compare that with a sea-level pressure of 1000 millibars, or one bar).
But this is still soup compared to Mars' air pressure: about 6 to 8 millibars!

It's not an astronomy picture. It's an attempt to lure people into enrolling in yodeling school.

What a beautiful photo!
Of course, this thread isn't complete without recalling of Senator Hillary's famous lie about being named after Sir Edmund Hillary. In fact, he was a complete unknown prior to conquering Everest five years after her birth.

So is the sky really as dark as it appears from that photo? Can you see stars from that altitude? I remember a scene from Apollo 13 where the view from inside the rocket cabin shortly after launch shows the blue sky almost instantly wash away to stars, which I was very skeptical about. But my brother replied that he heard that the transition really was that abrupt. Does anyone have any information on that?
