The Lebanese judiciary summoned Lt. Gen Michael Aoun for investigating him over statements he delivered before the US Congress and considered by the Lebanese judiciary as damaging to Lebanese- Syrian relations.
A Lebanese judiciary source said that the investigation judge in Beirut assigned the Lebanese embassy in France to notify Aoun who lives in exile in Paris since 1991 that he has to be present before the investigation judge on October 14 and in case he refuses to be notified, the notification will be hung on the door of the house where he lives.
Aoun acted as a witness before a US Congressional committee while discussing a law known as "Syria Accountability Act" which proposes to impose sanctions on Syria over accusing it of supporting terrorism and its "occupation of Lebanon." Aoun accused Damascus in that session of being behind the assassination of two Lebanese Presidents Bashir Jemayil and Reneh Mu'awad.
The US has criticized the judicial pursue of Aoun and considered them as contradictory to honoring the freedom of expression included in the Lebanese constitution. The US ambassador accredited in Beirut Vincent Battle filed an official complaint to this effect the Lebanese foreign ministry.
The Lebanese minister of justice considered the American position as "an unaccepted interference" in Lebanese affairs.
