A former chief of staff to Rep. Bob Ney, R-Ohio, pleaded guilty Monday in the Jack Abramoff scandal, admitting he participated in a conspiracy to corrupt Ney, his staff, and other members of Congress with trips, free tickets, and meals.

Neil Volz, 35, admitted that he engaged in the conspiracy for more than four years, both while he was Ney's chief of staff and after he left to go work with Abramoff.

It appears that the noose is tightening around Bob Ney. This can't be helpful to his reelection prospects.

I certainly hope so. But I fear that Ney is more like Katherine Harris & Conrad Burns than Tom DeLay.

No, he his plea agreement included the admission that "The purpose of the conspiracy was for Volz and his co-conspirators to unjustly enrich themselves by corruptly receiving, while public officials, and unjustly providing, while lobbyists, a stream of things of value."

DeLay cared about the GOP first and foremost, and it's worth remembering that whatever improprieties he's been accused of were explicitly meant to advance the Republican Party, even if they were improper, which is very controversial.

By contrast, the allegations against Ney, Harris, and Burns have nothing to do with the greater cause of conservatism but rather with personal enrichment or personal advancement. All of that is worth keeping in reference to "pulling a DeLay" .. DeLay was focused on the GOP all along.

Maybe Ney needs to take one for the team, just as DeLay did.

I sure wish he would stand aside. We can't lose this seat if the nominee is anybody but him.

It's past the time to file a primary challenger right?

Nope. Of course, it appears he's singing a different tune. There was a point in time he said he was innocent of the charges and that he would be vindicated and it would be put behind him. He should have been honest from day one, instead of trying to be a weasel by lying to his own constituents.

If there is one quality I appreciate in any person, it's honesty.
