The last time Wyoming Republicans competed for a seat in the U.S. Congress, 31 people applied for the job. State GOP Chairman Fred Parady is predicting a more manageable number this time around.
"I think we'll have our traditional, open Republican primary with six or eight, eight or nine candidates," he said about the field to succeed Cubin next year.
Saturday, U.S. Rep. Barbara Cubin announced she would not seek re-election for Wyoming's lone House seat. Parady said competition for the open spot is a good thing.
"That's how we produce new leaders and people that have the drive to make a difference," he said.
This summer, 31 candidates sought to replace Sen. Craig Thomas after he died following a battle with cancer. The more intensive campaign for the U.S. House seat will mean fewer candidates, Parady said.
"In that process, there were 31 candidates would could invest a weekend and be considered," he said. "To be considered to win the United States House seat you are going to have to invest eight or 10 months."
Already, three Republicans -- Bill Winney, Kenn Gilchrist and Swede Nelson -- have said they plan to seek the Republican nomination for the House seat.
Winney said Cubin's decision won't change how he pursues his campaign, but it might affect who he faces.
"It will change the equation in some people's minds," he said. "We'll just have to wait and see."
Based on comments following Cubin's announcement, Winney and the other announced candidates could have some company.
Republican activists Cynthia Lummis and Tom Sansonetti said they were considering candidacies for Cubin's seat.

A number of good candidates are thinking of running. IMHO, Cynthia Loomis is the best.

Looks like Barasso is getting a free ride to the rest of his term since he hasn’t had any missteps, thankfully. I just want the most Conservative nominee on the GOP side for the House seat. Colin Simpson is, I presume, pro-abort, so that’s a no-go. I’m presuming Lummis is pro-life.

Maybe the funk is starting to wear off. Had some good candidates for the OH seat, the NE senate seat, and now this.
I don’t think so. I believe that he wants to retire at the end of the term, and to go from veep to congressman is just a few steps down of the prestige ladder, and he’d probably have to step down to run, anyway.
