CD10: NRCC support for Harmer remains modest

Despite election countdown fervor from pro-GOP David Harmer forces, the National Republican Congressional Committee does not yet view him as a “contender” in his bid against Democratic Lt. Gov. John Garamendi in the 10th congressional district special election on Tuesday.

A Roll Call story today reports that the committee elevated nine candidates in its Young Guns program — its targeted candidate initiative — from “On the Radar” to “Contender.”Harmer was not among the nine selected for the second tier. No candidate has yet achieved the highest ranking of “Young Gun.”

NRCC spokeswoman Joanna Burgos insists Harmer’s status does not reflect a lack of support. The Young Guns program requires candidates to meet benchmarks for fundraising, campaign organization and develoment of a media plan. The higher the candidate climbs, in theory, the more resources the national party will throw in his or her direction.

Rep. Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif., compared it in Roll Call to the Housekeeping Seal of Approval.

It’s unclear what Harmer lost when he failed to make the “contender” list other than bragging rights. The NRCC declined to say what kind of dollars are on the table.

But the NRCC is helping Harmer with get-out-the-vote activities and helped pay for a poll in early October, although I suspect the Harmer campaign was hoping for more tangible signs of the party’s enthusiasm … like a big fat independent expenditure.

There’s only so much money to spread around and next year is a big year with the midterms. Obama won this East San Fran district with 65% of the vote. Best to save the funds for the many GOP candidate who can take Dem seats. This district and most others in California are so gerrymandered as to make it nearly impossible for the opposing party to pick off a House seat, esp. one like this that re-elected Tauscher over and over and easily each time. No offense to Harmer who I’m sure is a very worthy candidate, but to throw money at a sacrificial lamb would be a waste. That said, I do wish the NRSC would get behind Hoffman in NY-23 instead of Scazzafola or whatever her name is.

This is ridiculous. The RNC has no problem supporting RINO’s across the country. How about stop supporting RINO’s and send the money to Harner.

That’s exactly why I donated to HIM, not to the RNC ...

This is a winnable race. The last poll was done at the start of October. It had the race in single digits. Using historical turnout models, it was 7 points. Using the turnout from the primaries earlier for this very race, it was 2 points.

This is supposed to be a “safe Democrat district,” but the voters here are not habitual "D" voters. Arnold won this district in 2006.

Garamendi and the Democrats also think they have a problem here. Both Obama and Bill Clinton have been out in this district campaigning. You don’t call in the big guns if you don’t think you need them.

This is a race where the NRCC should be supporting a Republican candidate. This is a seat they could pick up, and the implications for 2010 would be big.

I sent money to Harmer. Here is a direct link to his donation page: https://harmerforcongress.worldsecuresystems.com/donate/.... And here is his web site: http://www.harmerforcongress.com/default.htm.

I plan to send a message to the RNC and RCCC. I have scanned one of my checks, and obscured the account numbers. I have printed two sided color copies of this and trimmed them to the size of a real check. I wrote out a “check” to match my donation to David Harmer (and another one to match my donation to Doug Hoffman), and then, in a red Sharpie, I wrote “I support conservative candidates” across the face of each check.

I will be sending those “checks” to the RNC and RCCC when they beg me for funds. Someone on here mentioned that they think the mailroom interns who open the mail at the RNC just throw out everything but the check itself. By putting my message on a “check” I am hoping it makes it a little further in the process, perhaps to someone who will actually read the message.

I am contacting the NRCC to ask why they are supporting Scozzafava in the race in upstate New York, and why they are ignoring David Harmer in this California’s 10th district. Here are the numbers if anyone else wants to call:
