Rick Perry has “huge” opening as many in GOP establishment remain uncommitted

As he weighs whether to jump into the 2012 Republican presidential race, Texas Gov. Rick Perry has been dialing GOP establishment bigwigs across the country. In phone calls that sometimes stretch more than a half hour, Perry asks the same questions:

Is the door open for a new candidate? And how wide is it open?

Perry is finding that a vast reservoir of the Republican Party establishment — broadly defined to include elected officials, donors, strategists and activists whose support fuels presidential campaigns — is so far untapped, according to interviews conducted Monday and Tuesday with 19 major donors, strategists and party officials in13 states.

Establishment figures are waiting to see a candidate build and finance a national campaign, hone a strong economic message and, most of all, prove that he or she can go the distance to defeat President Obama. The biggest force driving these kingmakers is that they are hungry for a winner, and although former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney is widely considered the early frontrunner, broad swaths of the party remain unconvinced that he’s the one.

The absence of an overwhelming frontrunner is bolstering the candidacy of Rep. Michele Bachmann (R-Minn.), a tea-party heroine who many key party figures believe cannot beat Obama.

Republicans interviewed also said they were open to backing New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie and House Budget Committee Chairman Paul Ryan (R-Wis.), although both have adamantly denied they will run. But only one of the 19 establishment figures interviewed mentioned former Alaska governor Sarah Palin, even though she said in a Newsweek story this week that she is still considering a 2012 candidacy.

It was said on Hannity (RUMOR) that Rubio is whoever gets the nomination’s VP. He is a shoe in.

Perry is setup well for it, if he wants it. He’s a re-elected governor from a big state, and Texas is about the only ‘bright spot’ for the entire economy during 0bama’s term.

Unless Romney or Palin is the nominee, in which case the VP will be Perry....

Perry is a lot better than some of the RINO alternatives for the VP spot. But I don’t think the sheeple are ready for another governor from Texas this soon.

Rubio was born in Miami to Cuban refugee parents. I beleive he would have no problem producing a real birth certificate to prove it.

Read the entire article. The establishment, which like it or not; is where the $$$$$$$$$ is. The article said the establishment thinks Bachmann can’t beat Obama;and that Palin is not favored (by only one) and if they don’t think Bachmann could beat Obama they sure won’t think Palin can.Palin lacks the independent votes more so than Bachmann. It is not too late for anyone; but Palin needs to enter her horse in the show by Aug.11th.And my guts says I think the rumor is true that Rubio will be Perry’s VP.

I wish he and SP would either jump in, or say they’re out. Slick Willard is in the same place Reagan was in ‘80 - the presumptive frontrunner. During that primary campaign GHW Bush realized that he had to make it a two-man race ASAP. Reagan knew that the longer he kept Dole and the others in the race, the “not Reagan vote” would be diluted. Myth wants to run against a broken field as long as possible.

The other reason SP or RP need to make a move is fundraising for the general. 0bama is going to raise an obscene amount of money and his opponent needs to be well-funded as well. This means raising big money now.

Perry/Rubio will be very strong; assuming there is a country left to have an election in November 2012

This is what I think the ticket is likely to be if Governor Palin doesn't run.

Perry/Rubio takes back FL, VA, NC, and probably at least two of the mountain states of NM, NV, and CO. That leaves a pick up of one of OH, PA, or MI for the win.

I agree the way Obama is acting with no exaggeration I think he would declare martial law and suspend voting.

I wouldn’t think anyone would willingly want to be connected to the GOP establishment.

I dislike the failed ‘establishment’ class of the GOP as much as anyone, but as you said, like it or not, there are portions of that apparatus that are critical to success. Fundraising, organization, etc are vital to any candidate.

Perry is not the first, second or third choice of the DC branch of the GOP. They love Romney, Daniels, Jeb Bush, even Huntsman. Many were ready to saddle up with the first two, but it has been obvious that Romney isn’t getting any traction and Daniels sat it out. Many probably realize that the candidate needs support from the base/grassroots, and Perry has become a favorite of the tea party class for some time. I think some of them are settling on Perry, just as many hard core twa party fans are also feeling like Perry might be a good option.

I don’t believe Perry is an ‘establishment’ guy or one of them like Romney or McCain are. This would be like dismissing Kasich in Ohio last year because he got a lot of DC support. DC support isn’t an automatic disqualifier. As grassroots conservatives, we have do the trust but verify when these situations arise. I believe Perry might be a good fit for 2012 in a year where we will need every bullet in our gun to win against the media machine.

I am very open to Perry and anxious to see if he gets in and how he performs on the trail. He is a guy I could get excited about, and had the perfect narrative to defeat the Obamanation.
