U.S. Rep. Corrine Brown has made herself one of the central figures in the George Zimmerman case.
The Democratic congresswoman got involved when the shooting of Trayvon Martin, an unarmed black teenager, became national news. Soon after, the Department of Justice launched its probe into whether Sanford police mishandled the case, and Sanford police Chief Bill Lee stepped aside.
Earlier this month, Brown whose district spans from Jacksonville into Central Florida got involved in another criminal case. She attended the sentencing of Marissa Alexander, a black defendant from Jacksonville who Brown said was unfairly sentenced to 20 years in prison.
In a loud, dramatic hallway confrontation, Brown challenged Jacksonville State Attorney Angela Corey, the special prosecutor in the Trayvon case, and accused her of running an office beset by "institutional racism," a charge Corey called untrue.
How many criminal cases has Brown gotten involved in during her 19 years in Congress?
"Probably not as many as I need to," she said during a Capitol Hill interview last week. There have been at least four, but two have come in the past three months. Both involve Corey.
Is it good public policy for a member of Congress to get involved in a criminal case? That depends on whom you ask.
"It's good when you have a community leader, included elected officials, that would step up when it appears the system is failing us," said Hilary Shelton, a senior vice president of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People in Washington. "She is, after all, a congresswoman and has used the power of the Legislature to change the system."
But Jon Gould, a professor in American University's Department of Justice, Law and Society, said it can cause problems...

Separation of Powers should preclude a CongressCritter from trying to pull rank in a case. Writing laws for future situation, fine. Dealing with he here and now of a case is an abomination.
I would say that Corinne Brown is dumber than a bag of rocks, but, I don’t really think she’s even that smart.
There, fixed it for ya.
I’ve met her. She is not very bright. In fact, she’s just plain dumb.
I guess state-controlled media has a central database for the phrases they are all supposed to use.
They ought to say "Trayvon Martin, mixed-martial arts practitioner."
Ok Brown said that she was sure that there were miligrating circumstances......UM! Is that a word or do you think she meant mitigating circumstances?
~ Larry Elder, "The Ten Things You Can't Say In America"
That is insulting to rocks.
************
Only saw her once in a TV interview....
THINK OF HER AS THE FLORIDA VERSION:
"MAD" MAX WATERS (D-CA)
SHEILA "JACKBOOT" LEE (D-TX)
CYNTHIA "UNHINGED" McKINNEY (D-GA)
ALL ROLLED IN TO ONE...
Remember.... (D- ...IS FOR DUMB@$$)
She may have had her mouth full of Skillets.
I guess state-controlled media has a central database for the phrases they are all supposed to use. That's about right.
As far a I am concerned, racism is situational. Take, for example, the white niggers living next door to me.
“I would say that Corinne Brown is dumber than a bag of rocks, but, I dont really think shes even that smart.”
Probably accurate, except this time Brown is spot on.
Note the husband was posing a threat to the woman, and all she did was warn him off with a gunshot.
20 years for defending herself from a domestic violence situation is straight out of Kafka via Wonderland. Had she shot and killed him, probably she could not have been charged.
But she did not shoot him and because the Judge has been reduced by “sentencing laws/Guidelines” to hte role of animated automated computer substitute - a clearly wrong decision is imposed.
Much as I dislike so doing, Corrine Brown is right in her opposition to this particular sentence.
She may have had her mouth full of Skillets.
The only way to know for sure is to pound the pavement.
Notice, the convicted woman was charged with “2nd degree murder”. Seems like that is the usual charge eminating from that prosecutor.
Meanwhile, I agree, Corinne “Go Gator” Brown is right this time.
[[Believe it or not, Angela Corey is a Republican.]]
She is as mjuch a republican as ‘reverend’ wright is a true born again christian-
I heardd o nfox today that now hte feds are getting involved and trying to have zimmerman tried for a ‘hate crime’ - What the HELL is goign on in this coutnry?
Pride in workmanship? Speeeel chexer is yur freund.
