Senate Democrats are pleading with donors to give to Rep. Bruce Braley’s campaign as they struggle to pull off a victory in Iowa and save their endangered majority.

But there’s one key player holding onto his campaign cash: Iowa Sen. Tom Harkin.

Despite direct appeals from Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid of Nevada and other top Democrats, Harkin has refused to transfer money from his $2.4 million campaign account to the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee, according to sources and campaign finance records....

Drake? Hahahaha! Drake is for Chicago kids who can't get into a better school. I imagine he has a villa in Barbados or Costa Rica he's looking at.

I think it’s funny. The Democrats have plenty of money they’ve raised from wealthy liberals, or stolen from the taxpayers. Their modus operandi is to use other peoples money first before touching anything in their BIG bank account(s).

In this case they have their eyes on Harkin’s leftover cache of cash, and are trying to pry it from him so they don’t have to spend their stash.

Does Harkin get to keep leftover campaign money, if he retires from politics? I seem to recall there are some cases where politicians had leftover money and were able to keep it for personal use under certain circumstances.

If he can keep it, or use it to set up a foundation such as the Clintons did, that would explain why he sits on it.

Yes he does. A dirty-little-not-so-secret. Kerry creamed over $20 Million from his campaign and took a lot of heat for (a) not sharing or (b) not spending it when it could have made a difference at the end of the campaign. Pat Buchanan (of all people) is reported to have squirreled away over $10 Million from his strange campaign.

The really odd factoid: even if the source of the money is federal matching funds, if it doesn't get spent, ity's the candidates when it's all over!

This is just one more way broken down small-town lawyers who get into office without a dime are suddenly millionaires after a few terms.

At the Harkin Steakfry, the senator signed copies of his VN autobiography, “Wings over Hanoi.”

Des Moines Register Editorial Writer Rox Laird has a Sunday weeper piece on saying goodbye to Tom Harkin in today's paper. It's as close to slobbering as I've observed from this newsrag.

Rox likely received an autographed copy of Harkin’s VN war retrospective, “Wings Over Hanoi.”
