coalesce around the best man for the job early in the process,

Absolutely, although we should wait until first 6 primary results are out. That will be a excellent indicator of who is connecting with voters and winning. There will be 44 more primaries left to beat Bush & Christy & Rubio.

Waiting until the primaries begin is already too late to coalesce behind the best conservative for the job. There's no reason we can't do that now, given all of the information available about the candidates.

Waiting to see 'who's connecting with voters' doesn't tell you who the best man for the job is. Only your careful vetting and study of these people will tell you that.

Think back to 2008. McCain rose to the top of the heap in the primaries, but can you say with any honesty that he was the best man for the job? No, you can't. The fact that he began to steamroll the other primary candidates had nothing to do with his worthiness as a candidate.

Why would you even wait to see how other voters are voting before making up your own mind? I seriously don't get that. That's what low information voters do. If you're just going to throw your support behind whichever Republican runs the fastest, then what's the point of even reading at FR?

Too late to decide by then. McCain and Romney had the nomination sewed up by March in the last two cycles.
