Ted Cruz looking to build Southern ‘firewall’
The Washington Post's PowerPost ^ | August 3, 2015 | James Hohmann

DANA POINT, Calif. — Ted Cruz made the case Sunday that he can win the Republican nomination because of his strength in the South.

The Texas senator was a crowd favorite at the Koch network donor summit here. He got the normally mild-mannered donors laughing and cheering with his red meat. But many worry privately whether he can win, and they’re desperate to take back the White House in 2016.

Recognizing this, Cruz did more to stress his viability than any of the four other 2016 presidential candidates who got a chance to pitch the 450 mega donors who have gathered at the St. Regis resort on the Pacific Ocean for a meeting that wraps up on Monday.

He opened a half-hour question-and-answer session by bragging that he raised more hard money than any other Republican in the field during the last fundraising quarter, including Jeb Bush. This money, he explained, will help him run a national campaign, not just one focused on the first four states in the nominating process.

“For any serious candidate to play, you’re going to have to run a national campaign,” he said. “If you are going to run a national campaign, you’ve got to be able to compete nationally.”(continued)

Everybody keeps worrying that Cruz is not catching fire.

He is proving again that he and Trump are the smartest guys in the race.
Trump has all but stolen IA from Walker, and NH from Jeb. Cruz takes most of the SEC primary? I can see it.

Which is why John Ellis enticed Gomer Huckleberry into the race when he was perfectly happy strumming his bass guitar once a week on Fox News and sunbathing at his Florida McMansion the other six days.

I’m worried that he is not.

But whatever is going to happen is going to happen. I am sticking with Cruz because I believe he is honest.

Trump very likely self destructs. I know thats blasphemy to many here but one thing you need is a sense of gravitas for the position and i just don’t see someone who had his own reality show pulling that off.
He has always loved to hear himself talk and my own opinion is thats why he runs.Clearly the people are fed up with Washington and the whole insider culture as well as the gradual decline in living standard for so many here. Politicians like to bemoan the latter but then turn around and speak of amnesty as though the two issues are totally unrelated. It’s like they have their heads in the ground. So Trump walked right into a hot button issue and staked out the claim and being an outsider gives people hope he will reverse the decline.
Cruz is i believe the quickest and smartest of the bunch. When the media runs with stories how he’s disliked by many of his peers they’re giving him, unwittingly i think, the very same outsider status thats helping Trump. It’s simply not as obvious but it will become so in due time.
I was all Walker for a good two years but i find myself seeing Cruz in a different light and have no problem making him my 1A at this time. I know one thing. If Hillary or Jeb or both become the nominees they will absolutely hurt turnout for their side. Neither generates any passion at all and seem to me at least to be indistinguishable from one another.

I’m sticking with Cruz as well. He is the best conservative candidate. Nobody comes close. I would love to see a one-on-one with Cruz and the “anointed” Jeb. I wish that could happen right now as I think it would help show the universe that is between them. I agree with 2ndDivison Vet that Huckleberry is pulling from the same audience - and I think it has hurt Cruz a little. Perhaps Cruz’s souther tour will help but Huckabee out to pasture. Strategy wise, Cruz looks like he’s planned for the long haul. He was smart to go after the Jewish vote early especially in light of Obama’s disastrous Iran deal. That more, than anything I’ve seen in a long time, has the liberal Jews a little more than worried. I doubt they’ll vote Cruz but it might make them sit this one out. Time will tell. My prayers are with him.

He has a plan of action/building - I will patiently keep up the monthly donations and pray for his success.

GO CRUZ!!!

GO CRUZ!!! I just read his book this past weekend, and it is a great life story and reveals the total corruption of the DC elite.

It is very easy to read and if anyone reads it, they will be on instant CRUZ CONTROL.

Another reason why Mitt Romney lost, a North East Liberal elite.

Just remember “ The Boz “ from the Seattle Seahalks.

So much promise, flamboyant, but retired in his 3rd year as a pro.

Good grief, what a piss poor analogy. BTW he tried to play for the Seahawks but he was a seahulk.

I love Ted Cruz but I’m concerned that he just isn’t polling well. I’d rather see him running with Trump and win than him running and not even getting the nomination.
