Ted Cruz visit moved to larger site

U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz's visit to Chattanooga on Monday will take place at GraceWorks Church, 6445 Lee Highway, according to a Republican Party news release.

Cruz, the Texas senator who is seeking the Republican presidential nomination, will make a "Biscuits and Gravy" morning stop at 9 a.m. The public is invited to meet him and hear him speak. There will be biscuits, gravy and other breakfast foods. Doors open at 8:30 a.m.

Admission is free but attendees are asked to RSVP at www.tedcruz.org/rsvp/chattanooga/

Former assessor employee to seek top post

Sterling Jetton is seeking the Republican nod to be the next Hamilton County assessor of property.

Jetton, a U.S. Army veteran and the pastor of Shelter Church, worked for 27 years in the assessor's office, and was the senior real property appraiser under Assessor Bill Bennett, who announced he will not seek reelection.

Jetton said in a statement last week his experience and professional accreditation made him the best pick for the job.

"The Assessor of Property is given the duties of identifying and classifying all property in Hamilton County. This role has many mandates from the state that require compliance, and experienced leadership is vital to the ongoing success of the office," Jetton said in the release.

Supporters are asked to help start the campaign with a breakfast at 8:30 a.m. on Aug. 29 at Wally's Restaurant, 6521 Ringgold Road.

The Republican Primary is March 1, 2016.

Haynes also making bid for assessor

Republican Hamilton County Commissioner Marty Haynes last week officially announced his intention to seek the property tax assessor job.

Haynes has represented District 3 on the commission since winning a special election in 2012. As chairman of the commission's roads and zoning committee, he has been directly involved in economic development and growth plans within Hamilton County. Haynes also serves on the legal and human services committees.

"Working to bring accountability, transparency and efficiency to county government has served as the foundation for each vote I've cast, since every tax dollar spent was earned by the hands of hard-working citizens," Haynes said in a statement. "Hamilton County residents and business owners deserve the best government that honors their values and principles."

Haynes is a sales representative for Porter Warner Industry and is also a licensed real estate agent with the Huddleston Group.

No JFK Club meeting this month

The JFK Club will not hold a meeting this month, according to a news release.

The release said the schedule — noon on Monday at the Chattanoogan hotel — was in conflict with another group. Organizers are hoping to reschedule for the third Tuesday of the month, beginning in October.

PILOTs and TIFS on LWV agenda

Charles Wood, of the Chattanooga Chamber of Commerce, and activist Helen Burns Sharp will speak to the members-at-large unit of the League of Women Voters of Tennessee on Aug. 17.

Wood and Sharp will lead a forum on PILOTS and TIFS, discussing what these are and why citizens should care.

"The majority of people do not understand what these initials stand for, nor how and why decisions about PILOTS and TIFS may impact their lives, " said Joan Hamner, president of the Chattanooga MAL unit.

Interested individuals do not have to have to be LWV members to attend the program. However, the local unit is continuing to recruit members, and applications will be available at the meeting.

The meeting is set for 5:30 p.m. in the training room of the Business Development Center. Parking is in the Renaissance Park lot across the street, or use street parking, not the BDC's lot.

I've tucked this link into Favorites for easy access to keep my eye on his schedule. They're very good at updating and have the new Chattanooga location posted. A good link for everyone to hang on to.

I've been keeping an eyeball on it in case the Huntsville location was changed for tomorrow but so far, so good. Ready and rarin' to go!
