Free Republic Straw Poll (February 2016 edition)
Free Republic | February 1, 2016 | 2ndDivisionVet

Posted on 01/31/2016 10:22:08 PM PST by 2ndDivisionVet

If you had to vote in your state primary/caucus today, knowing what you know now about the various declared and probable candidates, who would you vote for? Why? Who would you like to see as the running mate for your preferred candidate? If you could help staff your candidates cabinet and other top appointments, who would you choose? If you could recommend different congressional leaders than we have now, who would they be? And who would you like to see on the Supreme Court and why? And finally, feel free to donate to Free Republic.

Trump. For reasons that I've stated a thousand times on FR, not in the mood to repeat today. My preferred VP pick was Ted Cruz, that idea is impossible now, but I'd like to see Cruz on the SCOTUS. He'd make an excellent Justice, probably in the mold of Antonin Scalia.

As for Congressional leadership...anything would be better than we've got today (but then I thought the same thing about Boehner and look where we are today.)

Trump, fave choice for president right now, but would support Cruz heartily if he won. Tough call, might change back to my earlier Cruz preference. I like them both for very different reasons.

Veep choice would be up to the candidate who wins.

Would love to see Ben Carson as Surgeon gen. with the mandate to get rid of Obamacare.

Sarah Palin as interior, or energy sec.

Secretary of State: Someone like Pamela Geller (hardeharhar).

Sec defense: Someone like Alan West.

AG: Someone like Rudy Giuliani or if there is a tough minded pro-lifer I'm not aware of, even better.

Treasury: My brother.

The rest: Someone who is willing to take on the government bureaucracy they are the head of. Without taking down the radical leftist bureaucracies, we're still in trouble.

I agree with this except for Palin. Sorry, there's something about her I just don't like or trust. But the others...right on the money.

Trump, not sure of running mate, I don’t think Mia Love or Susanna Martinez would pass the muster but would take care of the gender and race issues. Hate the idea of having to consider those attributes in order to win but, if so, let’s pick someone who can handle the election nightmare.
Cruz for SC. I initially had him for VP but with the circular firing squad, nope.
Carson for surgeon general.
Palin in some sort of cabinet position.
Allen West should be also.
There are others out there but that is off the top of my head.

This country has NO future unless it gets its moral house in order.

//---------------------------------------------------------//

For Cruz' Vice President, Newt Gingrich would be my #1 choice. Gingrich is still the most successful conservative Republican political leader we've had since Ronald Reagan. His communication skills are second-to-none. His intelligence, creativity and ability to connect with the public are all tremendous. With a younger candidate on top of the ticket, I'd like to see that balanced out with someone older.

Newt has feet of clay! I did my job by helping to get Newt resoundingly reelected to Congress with 71% of the vote and the weird cowardly jerk turned tail and ran from the Congress just when we depended on and needed him.

I drove past his Cobb County office every day to and from work. I attended rallies for Newt in the Wheeler High School Auditorium and in the parking lot of Williamson Brothers Bar-B-Q only a thousand yards from The Big Chicken. I read his books, gave him money, and put out yard signs. I even had a pleasant chat with his sweet ex-wife about his books at one rally. She was a really nice lady! She took the time to talk with me for quite a while on the sidelines at one of his Big Red Bus campaign stops. She described the circumstances of Newt writing the first book. A gracious lady and at the time validated my confidence in him! How wrong I was, lying spineless POS!

In his teens, he married a woman who mothered him. In his 30s, he wed a woman who was broken by him. And in his 60s, he partnered with a woman who accessorized him. As (vice president, is the best we could hope for some combo of spoiled child, browbeating bully and smug trophy holder?

The first Mrs. Newt Gingrich was Jackie Battley, his high school geometry teacher from Columbus, Georgia. They married in 1962, when he had just turned 19 and she was 26. Jackie supported him financially through college and graduate school; a Georgia colleague once told Vanity Fair that "all the way through the Ph.D., he didn't work."

Another friend from that era described Jackie as a "nurturing, mothering kind of person"who "finished raising him."

"He was her little boy," said Kit Gingrich, Newt's actual mother, who struggled with bipolar disorder.

Even when he eventually prevailed at the ballot box, "It was a very, very bad period of my life," he later told Mother Jones: "I ultimately wound up at a point where suicide, or going insane, or divorce were the last three options." By 1980, Gingrich had made his choice.

"It came as a complete surprise," Jackie later told the Washington Post's Lois Romano. "He walked out in the spring." That September, Jackie, in the hospital for her third cancer surgery, had a visitor. Their daughters told her, "Daddy is downstairs." But when he came up, Jackie told the Post, "He wanted to discuss the terms of the divorce while I was recovering."

What Newt Gingrich's three wives tell us about the president he'd be

His problem with me is trust. I helped resoundingly reelect him and the next day he announced he was leaving the House. Not just resigning his Speakership, resigning his House seat. He didn't have sense enough to know that he had an obligation to serve after a very successful campaign. He has long had a problem standing up to the opposition. In every case you can list, Newt caved to pressure from Democrats and teamed with then in "compromise" from a neurotic need to be "loved and appreciated" by the public at large. When attacked on the budget for being petty, he gave in instead of standing firm against the Democrats. He even gave up his govt. limousine to accusations by the Democrats that it went against his stated goals of Congressional reform; although the fact is that Newt used it as a traveling office and got more work done in his limousine than ten other politicians together. Rather than ignoring liberal attacks and standing against the Democrats and the MSM, he continued to try to usurp their positions with the effect that Republicans were constantly pushed to the left. Rather than attempting to "transform government" he should have tried to stop the Socialist transformation that has occurred for the past one hundred years. He was my Congressman for 20 years, but after his self imposed exile, he left Georgia to live outside of Washington where he could be close to the fleeting dream of the power he once had.

Now if you feel so good about the moral and spiritual faith of Ted Cruz, why should you have any use for the little round flotsam called Newt? I say flush him!

Oh, and I want Sheriff David Clarke in the administration too. I would say Joe Arpaio but he is doing well where he is and not getting younger.

I agree with Carly for VP. Remember that VP is Vice Marketing Person. They give speeches and defend the president. Carly does that well.

Why not Cruz. Cruz might be a bad VP for the reason he would make a good President. He is his own man. Like having Reagan VP for Ford, he would never stay on message because he is not good at speaking for other people.

I could also take Kasich or Rubio. Both could give a mellowing appearance and may give you a chance in their respective states.

Now don’t get excited. I would not vote for any of these people. But they would help Trump as president. I would vote fore Cruz if not Trump.

And I love the idea of Cruz for head judge.
