It’s time to just say it. I’m getting about sick of Mitt Romney.

Yikes. I’m probably as surprised as anyone else to hear myself saying it, but the producers might want to start cranking up the music and offer a subtle hint to Mitt Romney that it’s time to get off the stage. We’re busy getting ready for the convention in Cleveland and the pieces are pretty much set up on the board, yet it seems that the winner of the 2012 GOP primary can’t bring himself to step back and let somebody else get on message. This pattern of behavior was on display yet again this week when Mitt let everyone know that he needed to keep attacking the presumptive GOP nominee so he can sleep better at night. (Politico)

For Mitt Romney, the decision to take on Donald Trump was a matter of personal integrity, the former Republican nominee suggested in an interview with The Wall Street Journal published Friday.

“I know that some people are offended that someone who lost and is the former nominee continues to speak, but that’s how I can sleep at night,” Romney said. “And there are some people, though it’s a small number, who still value my opinion.”

Recalling a conversation with his son Josh, the former Massachusetts governor said he was asked, “When the grandkids ask ‘What did you do to stop Donald Trump?’ what are you going to say?’” The Boston Globe reported the same account in March.

So Romney is having trouble sleeping? I’m a full decade younger than Mitt but I can appreciate the insomnia problems many of us encounter as we advance in years. Might I suggest some Sominex? Or if you don’t like taking pills, perhaps an ambient white noise generator in your bedroom and a glass of warm milk before retiring. But if you feel your only option is to continue your diatribes against this year’s nominee, there’s more going on here than a lack of REM sleep.

As I said, I have no desire to go around whacking Mitt Romney. In fact, I’ve tried to defend him and noted his admirable record, particularly when some of our friends like Erick Erickson keep up their relentless efforts to get him to change his mind and run. And I don’t deny that he’s earned a place as a prominent spokesperson in the GOP. Back when we still had an actual primary battle raging, Mitt was fully within his rights to pick a candidate other than Trump and stump for them vigorously or attack The Donald as he chose. Heck, I was supporting Ted Cruz myself so I can relate to the disappointment factor.

But if I might offer a gentle word of advice here, Mitt, the primary is over. Trump is going to be the nominee. If you are still trying to tear him down, what are you now offering as an alternative that will still allow us to stop Hillary Clinton? Are you planning to fight for a third party candidate, and if so, who? Not for nothing, but there were hordes of #NeverTrump people literally BEGGING you to run third party yourself. You chose not to. That’ on you, so stop complaining about the person who wound up winning. If you don’t want to lead the troops yourself, do us all a favor and step aside to let those with the stomach for the fight sharpen their weapons and head for the front lines.

I’m not saying Romney needs to endorse Trump. That’s up to each individual as their own priorities dictate. But what we don’t need is the loser of the last election drilling holes in the hull of the ship just as we’re trying to unfurl the sails on the Good Ship S.S. #NeverHillary.

I can sum Trump up in one word: Optimism. That’s where he’s most like Reagan, IMO.

What is the deal with Steve Deace? Has he always been a bitter, hate-filled theocrat? Or did Cruz somehow make him one?

Romney was just ashamed of his success and this shame made him feel uncomfortable around regular people

That's the way I used to think it through. How does his envy, near hatred, of much more successful Trump fit in with that? It doesn't.

We agree: the bottom line is his (Romney's) time is done

I think, and hope, that Trump, like Reagan, is deeper than he lets on. Reagan believed defeating the Soviet Union was essential because the American People were regressing morally and culturally, and it would shortly be impossible. Reagan has been borne out. Look at the unbroken string of criminal degenerates in the White House since 1989. Starting with the man who tried to murder Reagan.

Mitt you'd better hope they ask that, because if they ask what you did to stop Obama it will get real awkward.

Post of the thread winner !!!!

Mitt Romney was so ashamed that he let Obama win a second term? Mitt should have let Newt run for POTUS if he was that ashamed of being a good businessman.

I have been saying over and over that Romney will run as an indy. This is simply further confirmation. He just can’t let it go.

Amazing how he wasn’t too concerned about Obama being elected.

I am not up on Steve Deace. I thank you for giving me the incentive to look him up. I will have to study him a bit before reaching any pros/cons. I am certain you know far more then I do at present about him. Father, my wife would love to write you as she has faced cancer twice, a perforated bowel, and now she is 90% housebound and must wear depends underwear for the rest of her life as they cannot repair her fistula due to loss of colon plus radiation damage. She is Catholic and is so grateful the Lord let her beat stage IV anal cancer, then a perforated bowel plus a coma in the ICU/CCU, lung cancer plus more. We are so grateful to the Lord for all He has done for us.

I voted for his lovely wife to be the FLOTUS, that didn’t work out well. It is time for him to now go away and take Rubio, Cruz, and the rest of the E-GOP fakata carnival with him including the DC centric chattering class...

Romney is a real liberal with his socialized medicine plus he used the same Harvard guy who laughs about the costs and how they do this and that. I recall private health insurance and group policies. I can flat out guarantee that many Americans would be much slimmer with private health as I could not insure a 5’3” 210 lb female in 1980. She had to get under 203 before she was covered with a 50% rate increase.

‘Mitt Romney’ and ‘personal integrity’ are mutually exclusive terms.

Come on up to Boston for few months and try to get your taxes done without being reminded of Romney's legacy.

I overlooked a lot from this slime while he aspired to become President, but in the aftermath of his shortness in that endeavor, his true self is exposed.

He is is now lower than whale shit, in my opinion.

Same here - but I realized Mitt was in it to lose. He had no intention on winning. It was obvious at that debate.

Oh, he intended to win - at first. He just never realized how much hard work it required.

Mitt Romney is the Maynard G. Krebs of American politics

In fairness to Al Gore, he ran a better campaign than Romney did, who ran a genteel campaign staffed by a straight-laced crew of old allies who were not dedicated campaign professionals. The result was that they bobbled and dropped the ball like eight and nine year olds in Little League.

Wasn’t there some buzz that in the Mormon religion some Mormon would ride in to save the day, and become President and save America? I think Romney is a decent enough guy, just figured he was “the guy”, then found out otherwise.

Romney’s a little slow on the uptake - he hasn’t realized that nobody gives a hoot about his “concerns”.
