Dole says GOPers should fall in line behind Trump, pushes Gingrich for VP

Bob Dole encouraged fellow Republicans Saturday to back Donald Trump and suggested the presumptive GOP nominee select Newt Gingrich as his running mate.

In an interview with CNN's Ana Cabrera, Dole -- the 1996 Republican nominee who said he spoke with Trump last week -- also suggested Trump apologize to Arizona Sen. John McCain and New Mexico Gov. Susanna Martinez for disparaging comments he's made about them in the past.

"I have been a Republican all my life," said Dole, who endorsed former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush at one point during the 2016 primary fight but has since backed Trump. "The party has done a lot for me. I hope I've done a lot for the party along the way. But when Donald Trump clinched the Republican nomination, it was an easy call for me. What's a lifelong Republican supposed to do, support the opponent? I don't think so."(continued)

Bob Dole and I agree about Newt.
Trump will need someone smart enough, yet flexible enough to go with the flow. Newt understands how washington runs, and who usually helps whom.

Dole gives a reasonable position. At least Newt did some good for USA (contract for America, he got most of it for us)....and he obviously wants the job.
(Romney and Cruz are working to elect the D’s now...)

Bob needs to stfu ... Newt for chief of staff not vp. Newt knows how the inside works. He can make things happen for Trump logistically. His vp needs to be someone the rest of the independents can get around

How do you figure that Cruz is working to elect Democrats? You have links for that or just venting some more Cruz hate?

Agree too on Newt. He is a patriot and he is smart and not afraid to go after the traitors of the GOPe...to say nothing of the RATs.

No to Newt. He’s inside. He’s establishment. He’s yesterday’s bread. He’s everything Trump is not supposed to be.

Trump could tap him for ideas, but not as a running mate. The running mate has to be outside the box, just as Trump is outside the box. Newt is ideological and this election has little to do with ideology.

Yep, Newt would be an amazing choice. Particularly against C Clinton, since he can easily articulate how it was HIM and the Republican congress that created the budget surplus under Bill.

Some here still don’t get it. I too say NO to Newt. He is part of the Establishment. Many of us support Donald because he is an outsider, yet some here want a part of the Establishment to be a VP to Donald. I guess they want a Reagan/Bush all over again. Looks like some never learn.

i have no hate of Cruz, incidentally, I assume your comment referred to those that do

anyway there are a number of recent articles about Cruz not supporting Trump, for whatever its worth.... you can probably find better (I am neither skilled nor inclined to follow politics as closely as perhaps one should).. but anyway here’s a start for you...

Well what if Trump DOESN’T want Newt, or someone else, what if Trump wants who HE wants...he is right now the head of the Republican Party, not Dole...

No one should be forced to endorse a candidate, especially one who accused him of adultery, denigrated his wife and said his father assisted Lee Harvey Oswald.

Newton once called Bob “the tax collector for the welfare state.” I guess Bob has forgiven, good for him. Maybe Bob has decided he wants to rise above the Bushes (who beat him in 1988) for a potential swan song.
