Can only help. People attacking statues look nuts. The statues are dead. In many cases the people involved with initially erecting the statue have died. So they are more or less attacking dead people and dead issues. We just need to claim the moral high ground and leave statues alone. They mean nothing in the long run.

Ironic that the statue in Durham portrayed an ordinary, nameless Confederate soldier. Not some wealthy plantation owner, politician or slaver.

Most rank-and-file Confederate soldiers were not slave owners. They were poor farmers who felt a sense of duty to defend their homes from the invasion of the Yankees, as I understand it.

From a modern perspective, the soldier's motivation might seem quaint or outdated. But evil? I don't think most Americans would agree.

Some of these statues are [were] also works of art. We don't know how great the Durham statue of the common soldier might have been, now that it's been smashed by the barbarians.
