2020 Democratic Primary Will be a Stampede, and Bernie is the Early Favorite
Legal Insurrection ^ | November 25, 2017 | Mike LaChance

Democrats and many people in media mocked the GOP for having 17 candidates in the 2016 Republican primary. Now that the Clintons are out of the way however, Democrats are expected to have a massive field of candidates in 2020.

Amie Parnes writes at The Hill:

How Dem insiders rank the 2020 contenders

Democrats predict that as many as 30 candidates will compete in their party’s presidential primary in 2020.

And while it’s still too early to say who might come out on top, buzz is building around some potential candidates, even as other hopefuls fade to the background.

A year after a devastating 2016 defeat, Democrats are craving new faces with fresh ideas. Yet many of their leading contenders for the White House in 2020 are politicians who have been around for decades.

There’s also no clear standout in the potential field.

“You have a bunch of Celine Dions but there’s no Beatles,” said Phil Singer, a Democratic strategist who served as press secretary on Hillary Clinton’s 2008 presidential run.

The fortunes of potential candidates can change quickly. Sen. Al Franken (D-Minn.), for example, was regarded just a few weeks ago as a potential dark horse candidate in 2020, but that changed instantly when sexual misconduct charges surfaced against him.

Parnes singles out six names that came up when Democratic insiders were asked about the race.

Bernie Sanders Joe Biden Elizabeth Warren Kamala Harris Sherrod Brown Deval Patrick

The problem the Democrats face is that the only people with national name recognition will be senior citizens by the time the election rolls around.

Former DNC chair Donna Brazile agrees on the question of quantity.

David Rutz of the Washington Free Beacon:

Brazile Predicts at Least 25 People Will Seek Democratic Presidential Nomination in 2020

Former Democratic National Committee interim chair Donna Brazile predicted a massive field of 2020 presidential candidates on Tuesday, telling MSNBC’s Chris Matthews she foresees 25 potential Democratic contenders.

Matthews asked Brazile about possible candidates like Sen. Bernie Sanders (I., Vt.) and Joe Biden, who are 76 and 75, respectively, and wondered if there should be an “outer age where you’re just too old to run” for presidents.

“Chris, I predict tonight that there will be literally over 25 people who will consider running for president,” she said. “Perhaps Joe Biden, Bernie Sanders.”

Other rumored contenders include Sens. Cory Booker (D., N.J.), Kirsten Gillibrand (D., N.Y.), Elizabeth Warren (D., Mass.), Kamala Harris (D., Calif.), Virginia Gov. Terry McAuliffe, Colorado Gov. John Hickenlooper, New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo and Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti.

Sanders might be the early favorite, but there are younger and more attractive radical leftists to send chills down the collective leg of the Democrats. I expect Kamala Harris will be the nominee - after all of the sexual harassment stories coming out, the Democratic nominee will be a woman.

I pray that there will still be enough women like me in 2020 who value security of our nation and ourselves above all else!!!
President Trump is the ONLY ONE who offers that peace of mind!!!

There’s another problem with Uranium 1: the statute of limitations is five years and every operative fact occurred in 2012 or before. It will take a very creative prosecutor to get around that.

In 2020, Bernie Sanders will be 80 years old. I doubt he’ll be running for anything.

>> I’ve got a fiver that says Bernie is the nominee. <<

That would be amusing. After years of screaming that the GOP is the party of old white men, the RATs nominate an 80 year old white guy.

Keith Ellison is available as an alternative - since all the Marxist Socialists are aged out - running for President is a tough job, and persons past the age of about 75 or so may not have the stamina - turning to a different anti-capitalist, anti-liberty ideology, such as Islam, may seen attractive.

After all, we have had one covertly Islamic person in the White House already, the way has been paved for a person who has openly declared as Muslim to begin the trek.

Then the persecution of Christianity in the territory commonly referred to as “the United States of America” may resume.

They say that “socialism” worked in Sweden and Norway.

From what I understand it did work fairly well in those small countries until the rapefugee invasion. Then it failed miserably. Anything that fragile wasn't really working IMHO.

Juaquin or Julian Castro from San Antonio. I also like the congresswoman from Hawaii.

Excellent observations, especially if 24 other candidates are also running. She will get most of the attention and press coverage.

I suspect that those labor organizations ties to national security-ship building, ship operations including manpower, will either remain neutral or support Trump. The United Mine Workers union may not endorse Trump, but the rank-and-file will overwhelming vote for him.

Almost enjoying this, as much as the smug Sabin & Alabama losing. LOL, they are going to run a 79 year old socialist, who has accomplished nothing in his pathetic life. This clown is the front runner?

“You have a bunch of Celine Dions but there’s no Beatles,”

Haha lol.

The problem for the progtard wing of the party, they don't have any young contenders, just Bernie and Liz Warren.

I have trouble seeing this ancient socialist and near sure GE loser getting nominated. I think it will be someone from the establishment wing that pays lip service to Berner ideals. My money is one Kamala Harris.

Sanders got no Black or Hispanic votes and that's why he was never gonna win the nomination.

Among the graybeards I'd give Biden the best chance.

I’m thinking Al Franken/Jill Stein: the Franken/Stein ticket has a certain ring about it.

Bernie probably won’t live to see 2020; he doesn’t look well. Otherwise, I’m all for him.

We know this. They can’t nominate a straight white man.

Well, at 80, Bernie could just drop dead a week out from the NaH primary, and it wouldn’t look too suspicious

OK here’s a serious question requiring a serious answer by people who have a knowledge of US politics.

Who would be the candidate that most people here would fear? You can deride and laugh at many of the possible candidates and that no doubt is fun, even if it does get old very quickly. But who among the Democrats, there must be somebody, would pose a very serious and plausible challenge?

I would be interested to hear, I remember when they put up Obama the first time, I thought that “oh dear, this guy could pull it off, I can see he’s mostly pomposity and hot air but he has the appeal, he could do it”, have the Democrats got another Barack Obama or Bill Clinton in their ranks, and yes I know all the funny jokes that can be said about both after their presidencies, but that comes after they get elected, two terms each, 16 years in total.

Who do you look at in the Dems and say, “that’s the one that good give us a real run for our money”?

A black,Hispanic and woman...Dems do 3 out of 3 and it would be hard to beat...Kamala Harris and Juan Castro..Cory Booker and Loretta Sanchez from California...Gather the black vote,Hispanic vote and women’s votes....

Thank you that is interesting. I don’t follow Democratic Party politics to know enough about them but the names you mention sound interesting, and I agree they would be a threat (from what little I can glean about them skim reading wiki).

So realistically it has to be a woman, and it can’t be a woman from Hillary’s generation.

A woman of colour, and with a proven background is essential (ie not just married to a former president).

So Harris and Sanchez certainly fit the bill, I have to say if they put Harris up against Trump in 2020 it would be a damn close-run thing, after all Hillary gave him a close run.

Could get interesting, but I suspect the Dems will blow it and go for a “safer” older pair of hands.
