And no woman is under obligation to take the husband’s last name. It is custom, after all, and not any part of any law code in force in the United States.
The taking of a husband’s last name is a custom-not a law-it was brought here by the Brits and others of Anglo Saxon ancestry, from places where it is common. Those of other ethnic ancestry-Latino, Asian, etc do not do the name changing as much-it isn’t a big deal. Elaine rocks for going on the attack for the rude harassment...

As for Chao: Some of us who had a career and were known by our maiden names (or first husband’s name) in our careers continue to use that name after we marry in middle age to prevent confusion.
