How Much Trouble Is Ted Cruz Really In?
FiveThirtyEight ^ | August 31, 2018 | Dhrumil Mehta and Janie Velencia

Welcome to Pollapalooza, our weekly polling roundup.

Poll of the week

A new Texas Senate poll came out this week showing Democratic Rep. Beto O’Rourke within 1 point of Republican Sen. Ted Cruz. It gave new life to a familiar question: Could Texas finally flip blue? Normally, this would be the point where we lecture everyone about the dangers of putting too much stock in one poll. But this poll wasn’t even much of an outlier — it came on the heels of a few others that also show O’Rourke within a few points of Cruz. That’s an awfully close race for a state that President Trump won by 9 points in 2016. Is it time to start betting on a Democrat in Texas?

We still say you should hold onto your chips.

OK, first the new survey: Emerson College’s poll of registered voters, conducted online and through robo-calls, reported 38 percent support for Cruz and 37 percent for O’Rourke, well within the poll’s 4-point margin of error. About a fifth of respondents remained undecided.

Emerson was the sixth consecutive pollster in our database to find the Texas Senate race within single digits....

I’ll give Cruz the benefit of a doubt and I’ll encourage my fellow Texans to do likewise for the common good of Texas and the nation.

I think the pollsters are trying to crate a sense of hopeless inevitability. That Cruz is toast. I don't see it. I voted for Cruz when we gave Dewhurst the boot.

Cruz was my guy in the primaries but when Trump got the nod fair and square that was it. President Trump got my vote. Just as Texans rallied around Trump we shall now rally around Cruz.

I also believe (in hindsight) that in beating Hillary so completely President Trump pulled off a fantastic victory that no professional politician could have replicated. Further for the most part he is doing just what he was put there to do.

Who here thinks that he's in trouble in Texas?

If in trouble can be defined as having to fight like hell to defend his seat from a pipsqueak, virtually unknown, fake hispanic libtard, then I'd say yes - Ted's in trouble.

...vote, volunteer, and get some money to Cruz.

I'll give Ted one out of those three, but nothing more.

LOL....... A very good response. I think Cruz will win but
he made his own bed and now he must lie in it. The fact that
there are a lot of statewide races on the ballot this time
will help in IMO.

That's a fact.

Ted caused a significant number of conservative voters to fall out of love with him, during the 2016 primary, and at the convention.

Some folks may pound their fists and demand that we "get over it", but it is what it is. Once love, admiration, trust, and respect are lost, it's almost impossible to get them back.

If Trump pulls Ted out of the fire—Cruz will owe him bigtime.

I fully expect Ted to welch on that debt the first chance he gets. Right when Trump needs him the most.

I think a lot of people just check the republican ticket box and are done with it. I do that sometimes if a Bush isn’t running.

He is unquestionably an originalist with respect to the Constitution.

Except where it comes to that Natural Born Citizen thingy. He's a bit squishy on that.

...those Freepers from Texas who are always bragging all superior-like, that their state is the cat’s pajamas and everybody else lives in a blue state craphole.

I'm a Texas Freeper. It's true that we brag on our state, but most Texans do - and for good reason. The place has a history and a culture we can rightfully be proud of.

Texas was even a blue state once, but it was never a craphole, even then.

If you love your state and take pride in its history, don't worry about what others say about it. People from other states dump on Texas all the time, but we Texans just smile and figure they're jealous.

I could not care less about the back & forth during the 2016 campaign between Trump and Cruz.

My strife regarding Cruz is that this supposed genius regarding the Constitution opted to run for President despite the fact that he knew full well that he was Constitutionally ineligible. He ran anyhow. That makes him dangerous.

I got no vote in Texas, and I would be horrified if that State flipped, but I got no time for Cruz. He has put his own self first, and that is destructive.

There is no way ever in this lifetime that I would ever vote for Cruz, for anything.
