A large group of young African-American leaders gathered Friday in the East Room of the White House to hear from President Donald Trump, and they were treated to a campaign rally in miniature.
If White House observers closed their eyes around midday, the president could have been speaking to supporters inside an airport hangar in Wisconsin or a basketball arena in Texas or a 63-year-old minor league hockey arena in North Carolina.
Trump touted his polls numbers. He boasted about the state of the U.S. economy under his watch. He also thanked rapper Kanye West for his support.
And the crowd in town for the Young Black Leadership Summit organized by Turning Point USA, a group for pro-Trump students played the role typically reserved for the campaign trail, turning the East Room into a rally site with chants about Trumps proposed southern border wall and catcalls about fake news.
When he mentioned globalists, someone in the crowd yelled, Lock them up.
The president chuckled.
He was flanked by several carefully displayed American flags. He could have just as easily been standing before the large Promises Made. Promises Kept. signs typically displayed at his rallies by his campaign organization.
The Democrats are very nervous. They do nothing for you, and that was supposed to be automatic, he said, bringing back his 2016 campaign message that African-Americans had nothing to lose by voting for him.
Trump slammed fake polls. One audience member shouted, Fake news.
We all get attacked. Who gets attacked more than me? he said. I can do the greatest thing for our country, and on the networks, it will play bad.
Fake news, another audience member said before Trump suggested he should get positive media coverage after law enforcement officials arrested a 56-year-old Florida man in connection to a number of mail bombs sent to prominent Democratic officials and CNN.
The event highlighted how the presidents official events more and more resemble his campaign rallies.
For instance, when he visited the Department of Health and Human Services on Thursday, classic rock music played before he took the stage. Like before the rallies, Elton Johns Rocket Man could be heard just minutes before Trump began his remarks. Several recent official White House events recently have concluded with Trumps campaign-trail walk-off song, the Rolling Stones You Cant Always Get What You Want.
At one point Friday, Trump used another campaign line, railing against the U.S. defending countries and footing the bill even though they dont vote for us at the [United Nations].
From there, despite the African-American focus of the event, the president was off on a stream-of-consciousness rant about Israel and warning other countries to support Israel when the global body votes
We are watching you, and we are watching you vote today on Israel. And we dont like what weve been seeing, he said. We said, Aid. maybe youre not going to get it.
The crowd jeered when Trump slammed critics who have suggested his nationalistic America First governing philosophy stems from far-right thinking that has included coded racial messages.
Racist? How can that be racist, Trump said, shrugging as a U-S-A chant broke out.
Trump is scheduled to fly to Charlotte, North Carolina, for a Friday night campaign rally at the Bojangles Coliseum. In a way, it will be his second stop of the day on his 2018 midterms road show.
The Slaves are leaving the plantation
I saw this for about ten minutes. The president was taken aback. He smiled and was quite pleased. The audience and the president bounced their mood off each other. I enjoyed the exchanged.
And you know what the Massas did every time that happened.
Pray for their safety.
What about when Bill Clinton would speak at funerals with large black audiences and talk about himself?
“racial peace” exists - but the MSM and Democrats don’t want to see it - because they promote discord.
Living in the South, you can witness pleasantries in waiting rooms, shopping lines and other public places; total strangers interacting, joking and being friendly.
We are here on earth at the same time, sharing the same oxygen and dealing with the same stresses and anxieties. Should stop watching TV and have lunch together!!!!!!!!
It’s a shame that Muhammad Ali and Rosa Parks aren’t alive to testify to how great a civil rights activist our Commander-in-Chief is and always has been!!!
I was in my car, and Fox picked up the beginning of it. It was loud. I thought it was the Whos from Whosville shouting to Horton.
The president was indeed taken back. He kept saying, “What a crowd. What a crowd.” Kinda like what Henny Youngman or Rodney Dangerfield would say at the beginning of their act.
The other thing, they were polite. You could hear them.
I will tell you something. Young, beautiful and intelligent black women, get it, and they in turn are going to attract young articulate black conservative men, and those who aren’t conservative are going to be....
You should post this as a separate article. Everyone should see this. Can you post the photo?
It’s a dirty rotten shame now that even Fox won’t stick with one of President Trump’s events through its entirety.
This glorious love fest was close to an hour.
So grateful to have OANN, a classy news operation, which carried this wonderful summit from start to finish!!!
Hoping CSPAN might show it again; they only had it on CSPAN 3.
Oh no, he talks to them like they were everyone else.
Never posted a separate article, other sharing a copy and paste in a reply before.
I agree the whole country ought to see photos like this one of our magnificent POTUS.
Perhaps a fellow FR friend can either instruct me as to how to post a dedicated article or take that action themselves.
Watched it all with a grateful heart and big smile!
THEY LOVED HIM!!!!!!!!
Unfortunately every clip I saw had the cameras zoomed in so close on Trump’s face you could see every line or bump. So afraid we’re the media that a black person might be seen in the same picture with our President.
Hahahaha... that’s funny.
