You will never get a conservative Governor in California ever again. Best you can get is a center right Governor who can balance the budget and is pro police. That's about it.

Yea, but if the goal was for the fake Republican to win, they* would still have to pay lip service to immigration. So perhaps the goal is to simply split the non-DNC vote.
